Chicken Marsala is an iconic Italian-American dish that has its roots in Sicily. It was thought to have been created by Italian immigrants trying to recreate the flavors of their homeland but lacked the essential ingredients, so it’s not entirely authentic to Italy.

Even so, the dish is highly sought after. It consists of crispy pan-fried chicken with succulent mushrooms doused in a savory sauce. And although it’s a classic restaurant dish, it’s super easy to make at home.

TikToker Giada De Laurentiis (@thegiadzy) has a recipe for chicken Marsala that she’s keeping gluten and dairy-free. Instead of using all-purpose flour and butter, replace them with rice flour and olive oil.

It’s a doable after-work dinner, perfect for the working woman or anyone who doesn’t like doing dishes.

With just one pan, you can have it on the dinner table in thirty minutes, all while reducing the number of dirty dishes in your sink. So, of course, clean-up will be a breeze! Here’s how to get started on the chicken Marsala.

Ingredients:

  • 2 chicken breasts
  • 1/4 cup of rice flour
  • 2 1/2 teaspoons of kosher salt
  • 3 tablespoons of olive oil
  • 2 shallots
  • 2 to 4 garlic cloves
  • 1 tablespoon of chopped fresh thyme
  • 5 ounces of mushrooms
  • 1/2 cup of sweet Marsala
  • 1/2 cup of low-sodium chicken broth

Directions:

Cook the halved chicken cutlets in rice flour, then sear them in a skillet until golden brown. When they’re golden brown, remove the chicken and set it aside. In the same pan, sauté the shallots and garlic.

Add in the mushrooms and sauté everything together. Next, add some Marsala wine. The mushrooms will soak up the rich flavor of the alcohol.

Then, incorporate the chicken broth and let everything simmer together, creating a luscious and flavorful sauce.

Finally, place the seared chicken back into the pan and spoon the mushroom marsala sauce over the cutlets. Garnish with a few sprigs of thyme.

And that’s it! Dinner couldn’t be easier. In addition to chicken, the sauce can be accompanied by pasta or a vegetable on the side.

Chicken Marsala is a beloved Italian-American staple, and this extra-simple (and extra delicious!) version is a great weeknight staple. Even better? You can cook everything up in one pan! To keep things dairy-free, we left out all butter in place of olive oil. If you want to make this gluten free, rice flour is a good substitute for all purpose wheat. Recipe on Giadzy.com
