While it wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world to reach out to them and get rejected because they’re in a relationship, it’s definitely a bit embarrassing, and you’ll want to avoid it if you can.
So, let’s say you made the leap to reach out to the one who got away, and you have a date planned. When you get to this step, it’s best to be prepared for any and all scenarios. Just because you got them to agree to a date doesn’t mean you’ll automatically pick up where you left off.
This is especially true if it’s been a long time since you’ve seen this person. After all, people change, and they may not be the same person from the last time you were with them.
While it’s a good idea to be optimistic, you shouldn’t have super high expectations and make peace with the idea that it may not be everything you want.
If you do link back up with this person and things go terribly, don’t beat yourself up too hard. I think it’s admirable that you wanted to give the relationship another go. Just because it didn’t work out doesn’t mean you’re a bad person with bad judgment.
If that happens, shake it off and move on. There’s no use in dwelling on someone you aren’t compatible with, even if you were at one point.
