If you’re married and don’t have the closest relationship with your in-laws, have you ever gotten into a nasty argument or fight with them?

One woman snapped at her future sister-in-law this past Christmas and is convinced she won’t be invited to her and her brother’s wedding this summer.

Her name is Natalie, and she’s 32. Natalie has a younger brother named Owen, who is 28 and engaged to his 25-year-old fiancée, Elly.

She and Elly got into an argument last Christmas that was so bad that she hasn’t heard from Elly or Owen since.

It was around 9:30 pm on Christmas Day last year, and she felt frazzled. She and her mom had been cooking, cleaning, and setting up for their family’s festivities all day with hardly any help. She had hoped Elly would pitch in, especially because she was about to become an official family member, but Elly hadn’t done as much as she wanted her to do.

By 9:30 pm, she felt extremely flustered, as most of the guests had drunk too much, the younger kids were still awake and being rambunctious, and she felt like she didn’t feel any appreciation from her family for her work.

Around that time, Elly sat at her table with a dessert plate and didn’t say anything to her, although she was visibly at her “wit’s end.”

As she watched Elly eat the desserts she prepared and did not give her any compliments or praise, she made a snide remark about how nice it must be for Elly only to be a guest at the family party.

Elly was confused and asked Natalie if she wasn’t allowed to enjoy herself, and Natalie told her she was allowed to enjoy herself, but she should’ve contributed more like she was a member of the family.

“She walked away from me, and I just snapped and said, ‘You know what? I bet this was a lot better than holidays with your family, from what Owen told me. You should just go back to the trailer park next year, and you can lay around whenever,'” she recalled.

“I implied that she was trashy just because of her upbringing. She does not actually live in a trailer. If she did, I feel like that would be rude. I just said that because I had a rough night, and she rubbed me the wrong way.”

She knew Elly came from a difficult family and, at that moment, decided to use it against her.

Her relationship with Owen and Elly hasn’t been the same since. She spoke with Owen the next day and tried apologizing, but they’d hardly spoken to her.

Elly and Owen are getting married in August, and she fears that if nothing changes or there’s no closure, she won’t be allowed to go.

How can she make things right with Elly and Owen?
