Adulthood is filled with all sorts of struggles, from searching for affordable housing and building up your retirement fund to finding the person you want to spend the rest of your life with.

But if you’re close with your parents, then one of the toughest challenges is arguably watching them grow older (and perhaps caring for them).

This is precisely why so many couples decide to have at least two kids. I mean, aside from having a built-in buddy at home during childhood, siblings can help each other cope and handle the reality of having older parents one day, right?

That’s seemingly what this 31-year-old man thought, but sadly, he was actually wrong, because when his mom was forced to undergo an unexpected surgery, his older sister tried leaving him to shoulder the financial burden alone.

For some background, his mother is 62 years old, and thankfully, her insurance covered most of the procedure. However, there’s still a remaining balance of $6,000, and he and his 34-year-old sister were supposed to tackle it together.

“My sister and I agreed to split it since my mom doesn’t have savings,” he recalled.

Yet, just two weeks later, his sister turned around and traveled to Italy for a 10-day luxury vacation. Then, following her extravagant getaway, he reached out to get his sister’s half of the $6,000 bill and got told she “didn’t have the cash right now.”

To make matters even worse, his sister claimed that he should cover the entire payment by himself since he’s supposedly “better with money.”

“I told her absolutely not. If she had money for a luxury trip, then she has money to help mom,” he reasoned.

His sister, on the other hand, didn’t agree. Moreover, she’s begun trying to paint him as the bad guy for “making” their mom wait to resolve the medical debt. He’s even getting accused of being heartless and using money to punish his sister.

“And my mom doesn’t want to ‘take sides,’ but I know she’s stressed,” he vented.

Regardless, he’s simply not okay with covering his sister’s share of the $6,000 after she just spent who knows how much money traveling abroad. He’s just not sure if his refusal is justified or somehow a jerky move.

Is his sister in the wrong for going back on her word? Should he feel guilty for standing his ground? What advice would you give him?
