If there were awards for the fastest failed date in history, TikToker Sarah Barthel (@sarah_barthel) would totally win one of them.
Her date was over before the food could even hit the table. It started at 5 p.m., and she was home by 5:38, so that should tell you a little bit about how it went down.
She matched with this guy on a dating app, and they sent a few messages back and forth to each other. He asked for her phone number right away.
He then asked her on a date. They talked about getting coffee and going for a walk on a trail, but she had already gotten coffee that day.
So, he suggested that they meet for drinks at a particular restaurant at 5 p.m. He chose the time and the place. She agreed, but declined his offer to pick her up for the first date.
“Let me also mention that this man, in my mind, was just kind of checking a lot of boxes before we got there because he was really prompt to get my number, ask me on a date, which I appreciate, and he was really chauvinistic,” said Sarah.
She did her hair and makeup and put on a cute outfit. She showed up at the restaurant at 5:06. She texted him and asked if he had made a reservation.
She waited for five minutes, but he didn’t respond. She decided to head in and look for him because she didn’t want him to think that she was late.
The restaurant was an upscale lounge, and it was busy and loud. There was no way anyone could just walk in and get a table. She went back outside and called him.

He did not answer but immediately texted back, saying that an emergency had come up and he needed to reschedule.
“First of all, it’s 15 minutes into the date,” Sarah said. “That’s fine if you have an emergency, but there’s no way you’re just finding out about it this very second. You should’ve told me a while ago before I showed up to this restaurant.”
She walked back to her car and called her friends. Since she was already dressed up, she decided to go to a nearby bar and get a drink.
As she walked up to the door of the bar, it opened to reveal her date with another woman. They made eye contact, and Sarah started laughing.
She went inside and watched them from the window. He drove a baby blue Lamborghini. They both got in and sped off. After that, Sarah called it a night and returned home.
Sarah wasn’t the only one who could relate to last-minute date cancellations. Her story opened the floodgates for others to share their own awful but hilarious experiences.
“I was talking to this dude, and one day, I ran into him on a date. We locked eyes, and I knew he recognized me. I check the app later, and he had unmatched with me, but wait, he rematched and then tried to lie and say that wasn’t why!!” exclaimed one user.
“There was a guy hanging out in my DMs on Snapchat and every dating app for years. I finally was like, if you don’t take me out, I’m blocking you. So we make a plan, he’s talking to me all day, my hair is halfway curled and ready, and he cancels. Too tired. So, I go out with my friend instead because I’m ready. First bar I take her to, he’s sitting outside waiting for someone,” wrote another.
“My friend had a date scheduled one night, and the guy said he wasn’t feeling well and asked to reschedule, so she and I decided to go out for a few drinks. We walked into the bar and walked right past him, there with another woman. Dude looked like he had seen a ghost,” commented a third.
