We all want to be the main character in a love story and be chosen, cherished, and treated like gold. But for her, that dream came apart the day she realized her husband didn't see her as his greatest love at all, but as the consolation prize after losing his soulmate to another man.

This 32-year-old woman got married to her 38-year-old husband twelve years ago. She was still in college when she met her husband, and she was participating in an internship at the company where he was working.

They had something of a whirlwind romance, and they tied the knot before she graduated from college. They have since gone on to start a family and have two boys, who are five and seven.

She additionally works alongside her husband at an architecture and construction firm that he owns, so their lives are pretty intertwined.

"Until recently, I thought we had a happy marriage. But a few weeks ago, I accidentally found out that my husband is still in love with his ex-girlfriend," she explained.

"I overheard it completely by chance. I was supposed to stay home that day, but I decided last minute to go to the office. When I arrived, he was talking with one of his close friends. His ex had apparently left her husband and was struggling financially."

"She had reached out to my husband for help finding a place to live, and he was helping her. Then I heard him say, 'My heart still races when I’m around her.' I froze. It felt like the air left my lungs. I started crying uncontrollably."

Several of their employees had a front-row seat to her breakdown after her husband confessed to still being in love with his ex. They kindly got her a seat and some water.

Her husband walked in next, but she chose to confront him later on. Her husband revealed to her that when his ex-girlfriend got hitched, he thought he should do the same thing.

He figured she was a decent match for him back then, and that their goals and interests were aligned. He mentioned that he finds her valuable and would never intend to make her feel bad.

"He said, 'I couldn’t marry the woman I loved, but you did marry the man you love. I didn’t want you to go through the same pain, so I worked hard to make sure you were happy,'" she added.

"He also said, 'Marriage requires work, but you never had to work for it, because I worked to give you a perfect marriage.' To be fair, we’ve never had any major issues. Our families get along extremely well. We even live really close, which makes childcare easy. We often travel together while our parents look after the kids."

"But hearing that he’s still in love with someone else broke something inside me. He told me, 'You’re the most important person in my life. I don’t want to break our family apart. I want our kids to grow up happy.' Then he said, 'I know you’d never leave the kids. If you ever wanted to remarry, you’d want someone who treats you and them well. So why can’t that person be me?'"

She's left doubting whether she should remain married to her husband.

The thing about words is once they're out of someone's mouth, there's no way you can unhear them or pretend an honest admission never happened.

Love can't be sustained on gratitude or habit alone, as it has to be chosen, every day, by both people. So, when you realize that your person never actually chose you, how can you stay in your marriage? I don't think she can.

What advice do you have for her?
