You've heard of relationship drama—slamming doors, giving your partner the cold shoulder, screaming at the top of your lungs—but one woman took things to a terrifying extreme.
It was like something out of a slasher film, and the details of the case sound almost too shocking to believe.
On September 5, a 23-year-old woman from Fargo, North Dakota, allegedly tried to kill her boyfriend with a hatchet while he was sleeping. Two days after the incident, the woman, Lena Deoliveira, was arrested and charged with attempted murder.
According to another man at the house who was a witness to what happened, he woke up to the sound of screaming and saw Lena swing the hatchet and strike her boyfriend in the head.
He said the blow sounded like "splitting wood," and Lena seemed "out of it" at the time of the attack. Her boyfriend was left with a large, deep gash in his head and multiple fingers partially severed from his hand.
"He looked and saw Lena swing down with the hatchet; he couldn't see the point of the strike due to the obstructions but heard it sound like splitting wood, initially thinking she hit the headrest or headboard," the witness told police.
Lena reportedly appeared to have come to her senses after hearing a click from the footrest on a recliner sitting nearby. Once she realized that she was surrounded by blood, she quickly fled the scene.
A manhunt ensued, and she was arrested two days later, on September 7, in Moorhead, Minnesota, which was only about a mile away from the scene of the crime.
The victim called 911, and officers arrived at the scene around 5:30 a.m. Initially, he told the police that he was alone when Lena attacked him without warning, but the police later learned that a witness was present.

They found a trail of blood coming from the garage of the house where Lena, her boyfriend, and the witness were staying, confirming the brutal attack.
The boyfriend was taken to the hospital and underwent surgery on his hand, where doctors worked to repair the damage done to his fingers.
Lena has now been charged with attempted murder and aggravated assault. She declined to speak to the police upon her arrest. Her next court appearance is scheduled for October 16, where she faces the possibility of significant prison time if convicted.
The victim is still recovering from his injuries. Police have not released any further details about a possible motive for the violent outburst.
The case has left many in the community stunned, as it is one of the most disturbing acts of violence Fargo has seen in recent months. It just goes to show how quickly everyday life can turn nightmarish.
