A proposal shouldn’t be a competitive sport, and a relationship shouldn’t feel like we’re waiting around trying to check the next thing off the list of accomplishments or milestones.
If your partner proposed to you in a bizarre way, and then you found out they gave you an engagement ring only because your best friend got engaged that morning, what would you do?
After close to a year of dating, this 25-year-old woman and her 28-year-old boyfriend accidentally got pregnant. Their baby is due to arrive this summer, and they have been planning out the baby’s baptism and their wedding since she says they have to have that all organized.
She was disappointed that her boyfriend hadn’t yet proposed to her, but they picked out a wedding venue. That was just backwards, in her opinion.
One day, she was in her pajamas when her boyfriend called her to come outside, stating he had gotten into an accident with her car.
She freaked out and opened the door, only to find her boyfriend holding an engagement ring and a bouquet of flowers. She accepted, but she was frazzled.
That same day, she had mentioned to her boyfriend that her best friend Anna got engaged, and it got brought up again after he boyfriend proposed to her.
She then began to cry as she asked him if he proposed to her only because Anna got a ring that day. She had waited for four months of her pregnancy for her boyfriend to give her a ring, and she found it suspicious that he did it on the exact same day Anna got engaged.
She was afraid her boyfriend felt obligated to do it, and it wasn’t that he wanted to. Sadly, he said that yes, he had only asked her to marry him to keep up with Anna.

“At that moment, his world collapsed. He took the ring back and told me that I am the biggest regret of his life and that he wants me to [terminate] because I am not a woman that can appreciate his actions, nor a person that knows what love is and what it means to a man to actually do this,” she added.
“I did not react well, which I am aware of. I [was not] excited but more panicked because [of] his panic [about] the accident and the place that he chose (we were in front of our house, close to the car, and our neighbors, and it felt weird).”
“Now I realize that I didn’t react well. What can I still do?”
Ok, so her boyfriend has since apologized, but sorry isn’t going to cut it here. He made it clear to her that he’s not interested in committing and can’t handle being a parent, because nobody just explodes like that without some truth to their words.
I also am failing to see why she has to be the one to fix things and not him, because he’s the one who ruined everything, not her.
I wouldn’t be able to continue dating (let alone marry) someone who referred to me as their greatest regret, and she deserves better than that.
And finally, faking a car accident to propose is the craziest thing I have ever heard of, and it underscores his lack of judgment. Time to leave him behind!
What do you think? Would you be upset if you got proposed to in this way?
