If you propose on Valentine’s Day, it should be romantic, thoughtful, and planned out. Maybe there’s candlelight or a heartfelt speech sprinkled in there.

What TikToker Eve (@ebtilley) got instead was a last-minute panic purchase, a stolen credit card, and a public proposal in front of confused and annoyed onlookers.

According to Eve, her now ex-fiancé proposed to her at 11:59 p.m. on Valentine’s Day at a club with a ring he bought using her credit card about four to five hours earlier. The reason he proposed wasn’t even that he wanted to marry her.

He just got freaked out because he realized that she was giving him a present for Valentine’s Day, so he decided to make a big romantic gesture and propose to her. Her gift was just some boxers with his favorite comic book characters on them.

So, while she was in the shower getting ready for their Valentine’s Day dinner that she made a reservation for, he took her credit card and bought an engagement ring with it because he didn’t have the money to buy one himself.

His plan was to make monthly payments back to her.

He didn’t know her ring size, so the ring was way too big, and they missed their dinner reservation because he was out buying the engagement ring.

“We met up with all our friends at the club for the singles night party, and he decided to do it then,” Eve said. “Turns out a whole bunch of singles celebrating Valentine’s Day at a singles club don’t want to see a proposal and weren’t exactly excited or happy for me.”

Picture a dance floor full of single people reveling in their independence, blasting music, flashing lights, and in the middle of it all, a surprise proposal.

To make matters even more chaotic, she also had no idea what he was saying during the proposal because the music was super loud.

Caught off guard and overwhelmed, she accepted the proposal in the moment, but then had a panic attack later that night and ended up in the hospital.

Looking back, Eve is now sharing her story as a cautionary tale. She’s reminding anyone who might be sad about being single on Valentine’s Day that it could always be worse. In her words, you could be married to an idiot.

Several TikTok users shared similar experiences in the comments section, proving that desperation is not at all romantic.

“My ex married his now ex-wife on Valentine’s Day of 2025. No, I didn’t make any typos in that statement,” wrote one user.

“My ex proposed to me on Christmas Eve. He proposed to his current wife on Christmas Eve. He’s consistent at least,” commented another.

“I just had PTSD flashbacks because this is something my ex would have done!!!” exclaimed a third.
