If you had a stepchild living with you who kept on ordering food to be delivered after midnight, waking you up, what would you do? Would you force them to find somewhere else to live?

This woman’s stepson, who is 24, still lives with her and her husband. Her stepson’s bedroom is upstairs, while hers is on the first floor of the house.

“He pays $325 rent for the room/bathroom each month (pays month to month, no lease), and has a part-time job. We have had several issues with him in the two years he’s lived here, but this is the most recent annoyance,” she explained.

“A couple [of] months ago, we were awakened around 2:30 in the morning by the doorbell. My husband got up (because a doorbell at that hour is usually indicative of an emergency), and realized it was DoorDash delivering food for my stepson.”

“We asked him to please not order food after midnight, as both his dad and I have to be up early for work. Plus, the doorbell activates the dogs, and it takes forever to get them settled back in. He said he put in the DoorDash notes to not ring the doorbell.”

She pointed out to her stepson that it was not a good solution, since every delivery driver might not take the time to look over the notes.

Following that night, her stepson ordered more takeout that got delivered after midnight and woke her and her husband up. She and her husband told her stepson for a second time to quit ordering food at such a crazy hour.

She asked her stepson to pick up food on his way home if he’s planning on arriving home late. She wouldn’t be so upset if her stepson was respectful and got food delivered at a decent time.

Guess what happened last night at 1:30 in the morning? Her stepson ordered McDonald’s to be delivered, and the doorbell went off, along with the dogs. She and her husband were furious.

“Once again, took like 30 minutes to get the dogs back down, at least an hour for us to get settled and back to sleep. My stepson was off work yesterday, and there is no reason he couldn’t have made himself something to eat (he knows how to make meals) or ordered food earlier,” she added.

“I texted him this morning and told him this is a HARD RULE and if he orders DoorDash after midnight again, we are going to have a talk about if he needs to find somewhere else to live, because he isn’t respecting this boundary (this is among many other issues).”

“He argued that he pays rent, so he should be able to order food whenever he wants, and it isn’t his fault that DoorDash isn’t reading his instructions.”

She’s left wondering if she was wrong to tell her stepson he’s no longer allowed to order DoorDash after midnight.

Her stepson is so rude and disrespectful. He could very well go stand outside to grab the food to make sure the doorbell doesn’t get rung.

He’s paying nothing in rent, which is generous of them, and I wouldn’t blame them for kicking him out and making him find somewhere else to move for not caring about their sleep.

I think it’s time for her stepson to find alternative living arrangements, because he’s using them and not even showing basic respect.
