If someone in your family had a dangerous wild animal that they insisted was a pet, would you try to get that animal taken away from them?
This 19-year-old girl was asked by her 68-year-old cousin to babysit her pet monkey for a couple of hours today, and now she’s ready to do what it takes to get this animal taken away from her cousin.
Her plan is to call an animal sanctuary and get the monkey forcibly removed. The monkey is named Izzy, and she’s 10-years-old.
“She is a capuchin, which is a notoriously bad pet due to their intelligence, speed, and strength. Especially now that Izzy is ten and reaching that stage of life where she gets aggressive and territorial,” she explained.
Izzy has bitten her in the past and left her with a permanent scar. Izzy does many other alarming things, like stealing AirPods out of people’s ears or gum from their mouths.
Izzy will accidentally place orders while using her cousin’s phone or dial different numbers. But the worst of all is that Izzy is extremely aggressive towards strangers, and her cousin takes her absolutely everywhere, putting people in danger.
Her cousin doesn’t live in the same state as her, but where she lives, capuchins have been deemed dangerous. Her cousin isn’t legally allowed to bring Izzy to her state, though she ignores that.
“But she is convinced that as long as she shows the vaccination papers and the EAS certificate, it’s okay. She brushes off anyone who tells her that EAS are not legally protected and monkeys are not legal support animals (at least here),” she continued.
“She brings Izzy to hotels, restaurants, and would’ve brought her to church if I hadn’t offered to babysit. Izzy was dropped off at my home in a crate that was size appropriate for a cat, not a monkey.”

“She had one toy, a blanket, a diaper, snacks, and a baby bottle of water. The whole two hours, she refused to eat or drink and just rocked herself in the cage. She wouldn’t even groom me when I tried engaging. This is the final straw for me; I just can’t see how this life is fulfilling for Izzy.”
She’s left wondering if it would make her a jerk to reach out to animal control or a sanctuary and have Izzy removed from her cousin, even though her cousin treats her like a baby and considers her a daughter.
Monkeys are wild animals, not pets. I do think she’s right; her cousin is not giving Izzy a life that works for her. She should get Izzy taken away from her cousin so that Izzy doesn’t end up hurting someone.
It’s ok if this ruins her relationship with her cousin, because it’s not fair what her cousin is doing to Izzy, nor is it ok for her to put strangers around her at risk by subjecting them to the monkey.
