If your best friend’s spouse told your own ex-spouse about all the money you inherited, and you could get them fired from their job because of that, would you do it?

This 32-year-old man unfortunately lost his dad recently, and he inherited a ton of money from him. His 30-year-old best friend’s 28-year-old wife works for an estate planning lawyer, and he also always thought she was his friend, too.

“I went to my best friend’s wife about the inheritance to set up a meeting with her boss to discuss estate planning. I had a good meeting, we have set up a revocable trust for my kid with various contingencies and whatnot,” he explained.

He has one child with his 27-year-old ex-wife, and back when they were married, his ex got super close to his best friend’s wife. To this day, they’re still friends, even after his marriage came to an end.

Anyway, he didn’t mention his cushy inheritance to his ex, since he doesn’t see how it concerns her, as they are no longer husband and wife.

It turns out that his best friend’s wife went to his ex and told her everything he was doing with his newfound money. His ex called him up, livid with him.

He and his ex have joint custody of their kid, and he pays her child support as he already makes a ton more money than she does. His inheritance does not mean he needs to pay his ex more money in child support, by the way.

“I told my ex: (1) this was none of her business, and (2) she has no right to know about that. When I pressed my ex, she admitted my best friend’s wife told her,” he added.

“I called my best friend mad myself. His wife eventually called me and apologized. She said she let a few things slip over drinks, and then when my ex pressed her, she gave the details.”

“She begged me to not tell her boss. My best friend made the same request. I love both these people and understand mistakes can happen. But I am also upset and do not know how to deal. Any advice on how to navigate would be appreciated.”

I guess he has to ask himself how much he values his best friend, because if he does say something about what this guy’s wife did to her boss, that friendship is over.

If he chooses not to say anything, he at the very least needs to find a new lawyer and firm to handle all of his money for him. And in the future, he should take care with whatever information he tells his best friend, as it’s unquestionably going to get back to his ex, given how much his best friend’s wife gossips with her.

Do you think he should report his best friend’s wife to her boss for being so unethical, even though it will most likely get her fired?
