Most pet owners who decide not to allow pets on the furniture tend to do away with the rule eventually. It just makes cuddling more complicated.
In a video from the TikTok account @thegoldenbanks, a golden retriever named Banks likes to jump up on the bed, but there’s one thing he always does before he makes the leap.
“My golden retriever asking for permission to jump on the bed is my favorite thing in the world,” wrote Banks’ owner, Marissa, in the text overlay of the video.
The video captured Banks waiting to be invited up onto the bed on several different occasions. Each time, the dog’s head can be seen peeking just above the bed, with his big, brown eyes begging to be allowed up and to snuggle in the cozy blankets.
You can see the anticipation in his face and his wagging tail as he patiently waits for the green light.
The heart-melting habit struck a chord with many TikTok viewers. They rushed to the comments section to share their own pets’ adorable quirks.
“That’s so sweet. Mine makes me ask him if I can get on the couch,” one person joked, flipping the script.
“My angel girl Lilo used to bring an ‘offering’ to get onto the bed. She would find whatever toy she could and bring it in exchange for being allowed on the bed. It made me crack up every single time. I miss her so much,” commented another.
“My golden does this! But she sure is quick to steal my spot when I leave the room for a second,” noted someone else.

According to a 2021 study conducted by Canisius College in Buffalo, New York, less than half of all pet owners share their bed or bedroom with their pet.
However, co-sleeping with your pet can come with various benefits, such as easing anxiety and increasing the amount of time spent with your furry companion. It’s also a quick way to tell if something goes bump in the night since your pet’s keen animal instincts are usually more sensitive than yours.
And, if you get cold easily, dogs make the bed warmer, so you’ll be nice and toasty, especially in the winter months.
With that being said, there are some inconveniences that come with co-sleeping with your dog. For instance, dogs are light sleepers and take up a lot of space in the bed. But any dog owner knows that these disturbances are all worth putting up with in the end.
Overall, Banks’ simple but sweet ritual is a reminder of just how much personality dogs bring into the home. They certainly keep life interesting! Sometimes, they’re polite, and sometimes, they’re mischievous, but they’re always full of love.
The 2021 study was published in the journal Human-Animal Interaction.
