Not all cats are aloof little creatures who can’t tolerate the existence of other animals. Some felines are basically dogs in disguise and are unbothered by a canine sibling.

Instead of arching their backs and hissing at dogs from atop the fridge, these cats actually enjoy their company. They also tend to thrive in busy households and don’t mind a healthy amount of chaos.

If you’ve ever wished for a cat to happily coexist with your pup and peacefully share the couch together, here are seven dog-friendly cat breeds to consider.

Of course, personality matters just as much as breed, and proper introductions are key, but starting with an easygoing, sociable cat helps a lot.

Ragdoll

Ragdolls excitedly greet their owners at the door and follow them around the house until they get the attention they crave. They’ll even camp out in your bed for some cozy cuddle time all night long.

Sounding a little familiar? These plushy cats act very much like dogs, which might explain why they get along so well. They can even be trained to walk on a leash and go for a stroll with your dog.

Maine Coon

If you throw a ball for a game of fetch, both your dog and your Maine Coon will chase after it. Maine Coons were bred in Maine and have many dog-like qualities. This large breed is outgoing, highly intelligent, sturdy, trainable, and built for activity. They rival some dogs in size and weight.

Japanese Bobtail

The Japanese Bobtail is chatty, playful, and social in nature, always wanting to join in on all the family activities. These cats stand out because of their trademark pompom tails. They are devoted to their families and can be seen hanging out alongside their canine roommates.

Tonkinese

The Tonkinese gets its looks from its Burmese and Siamese roots. This breed is friendly, energetic, and vocal, so you might hear them chime in on a round of barking with your dog.

It may be the only cat breed with fetching skills as good as a golden retriever. The Tonkinese loves to be around people and pets and detests being alone. A dog would be a wonderful companion for them.

Birman

Birmans have silky coats and bright blue eyes. They are the picture of elegance, sophistication, and luxury, so they don’t really look like the rough-and-tumble type.

However, looks can be deceiving. These fluffy felines love to chase, run around, and fetch balls. They can charm both humans and canines.

Siberian

The Siberian hails from Russia and is confident, athletic, and adventurous. This cat may not be known for its devotion, but it certainly is quite the entertainer!

Siberians get along well with dogs, and you might find them scheming together for snacks. If you have a dog in the home, they will be one dynamic duo.

British Shorthair

This breed is laidback and independent with a muscular physique, so they can keep up with their canine companions. British shorthairs are not easily spooked and will get used to the goofy stuff that dogs do. They don’t like to be picked up, though, and will take offense to that.

Who says cats and dogs can’t get along?
