Proposal stories usually make you want to melt, but this one took an unexpected turn. Imagine playing secret videographer for your dad’s big moment, only for the happily ever after to turn into a frantic damage-control mission in an effort not to hurt your mom.
This 15-year-old girl’s 44-year-old dad recently proposed to his 27-year-old girlfriend, and she videoed the whole proposal, which happened in a park on Saturday.
Her dad wore a suit to get down on one knee, but that’s his normal attire, unless he’s at the gym or the beach. Her dad tried really hard to make it appear like a normal, ordinary day.
Her 12-year-old sister was there with them, too, but she was not told in advance about the surprise. Her dad’s girlfriend was jogging in the park, and when she was done, her dad had her ask his girlfriend if she could pose for a photo that would be perfect for her Instagram.
That way, her dad’s girlfriend would have no idea that she was secretly recording her for the proposal. Her dad’s girlfriend started crying when he approached her and held both of her hands, and she knew he was about to give her a ring.
“It’s typical for her to cry, but my dad started crying. I’ve literally never seen my dad cry before. Here is some of what he said that he is now bothered that he said,” she explained.
“He told her that he never knew that he could love a woman the way he loves her. He said that she’s his soulmate and his life partner. He said she’s the most beautiful woman he’s ever seen.”
“He said with her, me, and my sister, he now has everything he’s always wanted. When my dad tried to get down on one knee, she tried to stop him as she was saying yes several times. But he still went down [on] one knee to propose with the ring. She said yes.”
After they returned home from the park, her dad’s fiancée went to take a nap, and she showed the video to her dad, who found it cringey.

He instantly told her she cannot show her 45-year-old mom the video, since he said some things that were insulting to her. Her dad was worried that his words undercut their marriage, and he told her about the exact things he said that he felt were mean.
He then asked her to delete the video of him proposing! She didn’t listen to her dad, though, because she knew that if she deleted the video, it would crush her dad’s fiancée.
“She would especially be devastated to hear the video got deleted because my dad was thinking of mom’s feelings over her feelings,” she added.
“I told my dad that when he and his fiancée are in the same room, I will unlock my phone and hand it to them. And they can delete it together. He said we have to delete it now, and I said no.”
“I told him clearly that I wanted no part in the video getting deleted. My dad looked like he wanted to yell, but he stopped himself. My dad looked very stressed. He told me to go take a shower and do my homework. I left him as he was sitting down, hands over his face, looking as if someone died.”
She has not yet given her phone to her dad and his fiancée, as they were preoccupied with the engagement. She’s worried her dad is dragging his feet.
She is appreciative that her dad cares about her mom’s feelings, and she is aware that he’s in a difficult predicament. But she’s not willing to risk his fiancée’s misery if the video disappears.
“His fiancée is already intimidated by my mom. If the video gets deleted, it could forever change the relationship between my dad and his fiancée,” she concluded.
Well, her dad is wonderful for caring so much about her mom, even though they are no longer married. What an upstanding guy. And I think it’s lovely that she’s worried about his fiancée’s feelings here, too.
The easiest solution is to AirDrop or email the video to both of them so they have copies, then delete it from her phone. If her dad’s fiancée wants to share it on social media, she can easily remove the audio and put a cute song in there instead. Problem solved, crisis averted!
