This Real Estate Agent Discovered A Historic Graveyard On Her Client’s Property

Lauren Matera, a real estate agent from Maryland, recently described the most jaw-dropping experience she has ever had on the job in an Instagram reel.
A few years ago, she and her husband listed a house together. At the same time, they were working with an investor who was flipping a house. Lauren helped the investor pick all of the finishes inside the home, and everything worked out great for her client.
“They bought the house sight unseen and had us taking over all of the interior design. And, we also got to be there on the day that the counters were installed,” Lauren explained.
The counter-install day also happened to be the yard-cleanup day, and that is when things took a creepy turn.
“When we were pulling out of the driveway, I looked over my shoulder as they were mowing the lawn, weed whacking, and clearing everything down that was about waist height,” Lauren said.
Once filled with weeds and leaf litter, the yard was now covered in thirty historic headstones. Lauren was understandably shocked and had to investigate.
“The property used to be a church property, so part of my job then became researching the zoning and requirements for preservation of a historic cemetery in a rural area,” Lauren said.
Still, she claims that discovering those headstones was not even the worst part.

“The worst part was that the newest grave was from 2011. So, people can still be buried there,” Lauren said.
After doing more research, she later found out that the property used to be a large congregation with the graveyard located behind a church building.
“What started as a handful of headstones in the grass area turned into about thirty total that we found scattered throughout the woods– dating from the early 1900s through to 2011!!” Lauren added in the video’s caption.
Her reel went viral, reaching 1.2 million people and gaining over ten thousand likes. Lauren also asked her followers if a graveyard would be a deal-breaker and received an influx of diverse opinions.
Some people claimed they would not mind at all.
“My dream would be to live on such a property. Taking care of such a property would be an honor,” one user commented.
“I’d buy a house with a graveyard. You live somewhere and then already have a place to be buried when you die,” wrote another.
For others, a graveyard is an absolute no.
“Hard pass! No way, nada, see ya, next! What kind of property are you trying to sell me?!” commented one terrified user.
“This is my nightmare,” chimed in another.
What do you think? Would the thought of a graveyard in your backyard completely freak you out?
