This Interior Designer Shared Some Genius DIY Classroom Decor Ideas For Teachers On A Budget
Everyone knows teachers are not properly compensated for their extremely important job– educating our next generation of adults.
But, on top of that, non-teachers might not know that educators are even expected to shell out their own hard-earned cash for things like classroom supplies and decor.
In fact, according to Savings.com, the average teacher will spend about five hundred and sixty dollars on their classrooms this year.
Moreover, twenty-five percent of educators reported they would need to spend over seven hundred and fifty dollars.
So, if you are a teacher who is looking to save some dough this school year, skip stores like Target, Walmart, and even Amazon.
Instead, you can spice up your space on an extremely low budget using some crafty classroom DIY techniques shared by interior designer Emily Shaw.
Emily recently started a new series on TikTok detailing sustainable and cost-effective projects that nearly any teacher can accomplish.
So, grab a pencil, because you will not want to miss these notes.

Emily’s first idea involves the recycling of cardboard toilet paper rolls or paper towel rolls.
Instead of investing in costly cubbies or wall storage, these tubes can do the same job for virtually no additional money.
All you have to do is collect any rolls you discard before school starts and, once you have a bunch, cut them down to a uniform desired length.
Afterward, you can assemble the rolls in a honeycomb-like formation and secure them together using hot glue.
Finally, use a poster board as a backing that can be hung or mounted on a wall or door back. You will then be left with a highly functional and budget-friendly storage solution perfect for stowing pens, pencils, highlighters, art supplies, and more.
You can even take this project one step further by color coding the tubes. These colors can reflect a classroom reward system or even correspond to every single student in your class– giving each pupil a safe and secure way to store their stationary for the next day.
Plus, if you are a science teacher or just happen to love nature, you can even use the remaining tubes to construct molecule-like formations and designs on the wall.
Emily’s second idea involves bringing hanging greenery into your classroom without breaking the bank.
Simply grab a hula hoop– which can be bought for a dollar at most dollar stores– and some fake vines.
Then, just wrap the vines around the hoop before suspending the hoop from your ceiling using ribbon.
This can add a playful and imaginative element to a reading nook or playhouse area.
And you can even spice up this project by adding extra hanging fabric or fake flowers that you have lying around your home.
Finally, another great idea Emily shared only requires old books and some tape. You can create folded paper ornaments to hang from the ceiling, large origami greenery to fill up some negative space, or even use the paper as an aesthetically pleasing collage board background instead of typical construction paper.
These paper ideas can also be expanded to create whatever interests you and is a great project to potentially get some students involved in, too.
