A mom has a daughter named Meg, who is 18, and Meg is really into social causes right now. She attends marches, assists with a couple of NGOs, and helps those who are homeless.

Most recently, though, Meg has taken up an issue with “capital accumulation,” and the thing is, their entire family is really well-off, so you can see how that has created waves between Meg and everyone else.

“My husband and I come from a wealthy background,” she explained. “Although our parents don’t fully help, we know our privileges and the ease with which we can achieve our career and financial success.”

“But Meg doesn’t seem to understand; she often criticizes each more expensive purchase, saying that we could donate this money to people in need. I really understand her ideal, but it gets annoyed all the time and any purchase she’s criticizing.”

“What she also doesn’t understand is with the little of this excess capital of ours, she has the freedom to do this all the time without money stopping her.”

“All the luxuries like an iPhone, car, and money are given to her so she can work as she wants, and we agreed to help when she said she would like to take a gap year to delve into the causes.”

So, she and her husband are funding Meg’s lifestyle with the money that they have, yet Meg is so critical of the wealthy.

A few weeks ago, she and her husband thought it would be nice for their family to take a trip to another country, as they have not traveled at all since before the pandemic.

While she and her husband were organizing the trip, Meg went on and on about how they should not fly business class since it was so expensive, and Meg wanted that money to go to a better cause.

She relented and decided to book them all seats in the back of the plane for their 10-hour flight.

When they all arrived at the airport, she told her husband that she would meet him at the gate, and in the meantime, she wanted to check out the duty-free section to do a bit of shopping.

As soon as she said that, Meg began berating her for spending money, which began irritating her.

She let Meg know she had to cut it out, and it quickly dawned on her that Meg was going to be acting like this for the entire duration of their vacation.

Then, they made it to check-in for their flight, and the person assisting them said they could upgrade her seat to executive class.

Meg was not pleased with this and made a threat to go on another rant, but this mom had had enough of her.

She told the person that she was happy to upgrade her seats, but instead of asking for 3 seats, she only asked for 2.

She upgraded her seat and her husband’s seat, but she refused to upgrade Meg’s seat too. Meg fell silent as soon as she figured out that she would not be sitting in the same section as her parents.

Meg then wanted to know if she would also be getting an upgrade, but this mom informed Meg that she wasn’t going to spend the next 10 hours listening to her rant about money while she could try to relax and enjoy the flight.

“She started to say we should all stay in economy, and I said no; she got annoyed about it,” she said.

“On the trip, she didn’t enjoy anything and stayed on her cell phone. On the way back, I offered to pay for hers, and she refused.”

“When we got home, she said that we knew that she is financially dependent on us and that we accepted to support her financially and that we refused to upgrade even though she couldn’t do it to prove our point.”

“And that we were vindictive for being fed up with her pointing out only the truths, and if we don’t like her way, let us know and don’t punish her.”

It’s been 5 days since they arrived home from their trip, and Meg isn’t really on speaking terms with them.

She’s left wondering if it was wrong of her to leave Meg behind in order to prove her point. Do you think so?
