In 1988, This Woman Was Discovered Stabbed To Death In Her Bedroom By Her 7-Year-Old Daughter: Now, After 34 Years, Authorities Are Asking For Help
In 1988, Mary Morgan Pewitt of Comanche, Oklahoma, led a difficult life. The twenty-five-year-old had a long history of turbulent relationships; she was already divorced twice, with her third marriage being rocky, too.
And on top of that, Mary struggled to make ends meet. While working at a nursing home, she was injured and forced to undergo various surgeries– so money was scarce during that time.
But, after recovering, Mary was able to find a new job at the only bar in her small town known as Harold’s Club.
So, June 3, 1998, started off much like any other day. First, Mary worked a shift at the bar; then, come the end of the night, she closed up and dropped off the bar tabs at her boss’ house. And afterward, she returned home.
Her third husband, Stan, had moved out of their house by that time. Plus, her two daughters had been spending the evening at their grandparent’s home. So, Mary had planned to enjoy a quiet night alone.
But, once she arrived, Mary found her friend, Randy, already over at her house. The pair ended up sitting down, chatting, and watching TV for a while until Randy left at about 12:45 a.m. Then, Mary was alone for the rest of the night– or so everyone thought.
The next morning, Elizabeth, Mary’s mother, packed up her two grandchildren and brought them over to Mary’s house. Upon arrival, though, Elizabeth knocked, and Mary did not come to the door.
This caught Elizabeth off guard since Mary was supposed to be home to take back her children. In turn, Elizabeth and her two grandchildren began to search the property.

That’s when Mary’s seven-year-old daughter, Amber, decided to peek through Mary’s bedroom window– and what she saw was horrifying.
Mary was lying in bed and completely covered in blood. Elizabeth was shaken and immediately contacted authorities.
Officers from the Comanche Police Department promptly arrived on the scene and ultimately found that Mary had been stabbed over thirty times in her neck and chest in her very own bedroom.
Investigators also concluded that Mary had tried to fight back against her attacker after discovering defensive wounds on her arms and hands.
Additionally, the mother-of-two was found wearing only a t-shirt, a pair of underwear, and a pair of socks. Despite this, though, authorities declared that there were no signs of assault.
Instead, due to the crime’s brutal nature and the high number of stab wounds, they believed that Mary’s attacker knew her personally.
So, the Comanche Police Department launched an investigation into the murder. But, after very little progress was made, Mary’s case was handed over to the Stephens County Sheriff’s Department.
But unfortunately, the Sheriff’s Department was also unable to ascertain any suspects– leading the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI) to ultimately take over Mary’s case.
In subsequent interviews, OSBI agents claimed that the largest problem in investigating Mary’s murder was the plethora of suspects that they needed to consider and clear.
Nonetheless, it has now been over thirty-four years since Mary died, and the OSBI has still not indicated anyone.
Instead, agents have pointed to numerous theories and scenarios. For example, did a former partner seek to hurt Mary?
Or, since Mary was a beautiful young woman who attracted various men in town, did a stalker or secret admirer kill her? Sadly, neither the authorities nor Mary’s family has ever learned the answer. And the lack of case progress has been excruciating for her two daughters– Kira and Amber.
According to Kira, Amber turned to faith in hopes of coming to peace with their mother’s murder. However, Kira cannot rest until she knows that justice is served.
“I just want to know [what happened.] My daughter is ten years old and is asking about her grandmother, and I don’t have any answers for her,” Kira said.
She has created a Facebook page entitled Mary Morgan Pewitt to help raise awareness about her mother’s case and also issued a plea to community members on what would have been her mother’s fifty-fourth birthday earlier this year.
“If this was your loved one or your family member and you wanted to know, just put yourself in someone else’s shoes. It is not too late to speak up,” Kira said in an interview with News9.
As of this year, the OSBI has also asked the community for help in identifying two women. Both of the women were Duncan, Oklahoma, residents in the 1980s and are not suspects in the case.
Instead, OSBI agents simply believe they may have more information about what happened on the tragic evening of Mary’s murder. If you have any information about Mary’s case, you are urged to call the OSBI at (800) 522-8017 or email [email protected]. Tipsters can receive up to a ten thousand dollar reward.
