And after telling her parents all of this, they ended up begging her to tell the insurance company that she had given her sister permission to drive the car. To be honest, though, she straight-up told her parents no. So, her parents kind of felt backed into a corner, and they ultimately decided to replace her car rather than go through insurance. That way, her sister would not have to face any legal repercussions.
The money for another car does not just grow on a tree following a crash, though. In turn, her parents were forced to take the cash out of a vacation fund– which was meant to take her and her nieces on a trip to Orlando next summer for her graduation.
Frankly, though, she has been very mature about this situation. In fact, she said that it was fine and claimed that she could do without seeing Disney World all over again. It’s her family, on the other hand, who is totally pissed.
“My parents, sister, and nieces are upset with me and saying that I’m a [jerk] for denying my nieces the opportunity to go on a vacation that they have never had,” she explained.
But to be honest, she thinks none of that is her fault. So, she ended up just asking her parents if putting a lock on her door in the first place would have been cheaper, and that got them to quiet down a bit.
Her mom also has since put a deadbolt on her bedroom door, and her parents only have a spare key for emergencies– which she is thankful about. Since reflecting on all of this drama, though, she started to feel a bit guilty about the situation. So now, she is questioning whether making her parents choose between letting her sister go to jail or replacing her car with vacation money makes her a jerk or not.
Why do you think her parents continue to enable her sister’s reckless behavior? Can you believe that her parents and sister are mad at her about the vacation now, even though the damage was her sister’s fault? Do you believe her parents should have let charges get pressed to teach her sister a lesson or not? Is she the jerk for wanting her car replaced?
