She Wants To Adopt Her Niece Because Her Sister Has Made No Effort To Be Involved In Her Niece’s Life Over The Last 6 Months, But Now Her Sister Is Accusing Her Of Trying To “Steal” The Baby
This twenty-nine-year-old woman has a little sister named Jane, who is twenty-one. And last year, Jane had a baby girl, Sara, who is now fourteen-months-old.
Rather than Jane raising Sara, though, she has actually had custody of Sara since this past June.
Apparently, this switch in guardianship came after Jane went through a really tumultuous period. Her sister reportedly got divorced, did not have a job, and was homeless.
So, at first, she actually just offered to take temporary guardianship of Sara. That way, her niece would be safe and well cared for; meanwhile, Jane would have a chance to get her life together.
According to her, though, Jane actually refused that initial offer. But, after one incident happened, it became clear that Sara would be better off in her hands.
“After Sara was dropped off at our mom’s house in dirty clothes and an old diaper by a stranger, while she was supposed to be under the care of her father, Jane agreed to give her to my wife and me,” she recalled.
Now, at that point, she and her wife made it crystal clear that this would only be a temporary arrangement.
Moreover, Jane would still maintain complete access to Sara and could get her baby back whenever she felt ready.
Over the past six months, though, she claims that Jane has virtually disappeared from Sara’s life. Apparently, her sister does not ask about Sara or make any effort to visit her. Jane also never asks her or her wife to bring Sara over to visit.
Plus, despite Jane finding a job and place to live– albeit not as safe as she might have liked– her sister still has yet to offer to take any financial responsibility.
“Not even in the form of buying Sara gifts. And Jane doesn’t call to talk to her or see her,” she added.
And honestly, this started to really worry her. So, she recently sat down to speak with Jane about all of this, but she believes her sister’s excuses are bogus.
According to her, Jane believes that being even slightly involved in Sara’s life is just too emotionally hurtful since Jane claims to really miss her daughter.
And in terms of visitation, Jane defended herself by saying that she did not have enough money to afford a car or purchase Uber rides or diapers.
“But I told her how absolutely ridiculous that all is. You don’t need a car or money to call or text,” she said.
On top of that, she and her wife have always made it clear that they would be willing to bring Sara to Jane’s home.
And in terms of the financial aspect, she believes that Jane does have money. Rather than spending it on her daughter, though, she claims that Jane has been spending a “wasteful” amount of cash on things like food and vapes.
Still, following that conversation, she tried to give her sister the benefit of the doubt and some more time to get her act together. It appears that Jane still has not made any changes, though.
And now, she and her wife feel as though they have no other option but to look into their legal adoption options.
According to her, Sara has been legally abandoned. Plus, she and her wife only need to hold onto her niece for a bit longer before the court will allow for the termination of both Jane’s and Jane’s ex-husband’s rights entirely.
If you could not have guessed it, though, Jane has become livid since learning about her plan. In fact, she has even been threatened numerous times by her sister, even though Jane has yet to follow through on any of those threats.
There is also one more critical piece of this story that must be noted. Apparently, after she and her wife had originally offered to take in Sara, they also attempted to conceive their own child through IVF, and it failed.
Now, they did not tell anyone about this– not even their family. However, she did opt to tell Jane about her childbearing struggles from the first day she got guardianship of Sara– because, apparently, she did not want her sister to think she was trying to be sneaky by trying to care for Sara.
And according to her, Jane had no issue with this reality at the time. But, since she has announced her plans to try and get full custody of her niece, Jane has begun bringing up her fertility troubles and throwing them in her face. In fact, she is even being accused of trying to steal Sara since she cannot have a baby of her own.
Quite frankly, though, she claims this is far from the real truth. Plus, she and her wife already have one adopted child– a son– together.
“We are genuinely worried about the safety and well-being of Sara if she were to go back to Jane. And [because of] the fact that Jane has essentially ghosted her baby, we feel we have every right to pursue permanent guardianship and adoption,” she vented.
Still, though, with her sister painting her intentions as evil, she has been left wondering if “stealing” Jane’s baby Sara to give her niece a better life would actually be the wrong thing to do or not.
Is Jane’s reasoning for not wanting to see Sara understandable or selfish? Does it sound like she and her wife are actually trying to “steal” her niece or give Sara a more stable upbringing? Do you think Sara is better off with her or Jane? If you were in her shoes, how would you navigate this sticky situation?
