This twenty-three-year-old man had been living with his girlfriend Ann, who is twenty-two, and his beloved dog named Bo. But, just recently, Ann’s twenty-five-year-old brother, Al, was laid off from work and could not afford to pay his rent.

So, Ann ended up asking if her brother could stay with them for a short while. And at first, he did not mind at all.

“Ann is not on speaking terms with her parents, and I assumed Al probably wasn’t either and did not have a place to go,” he explained.

“Plus, I really loved Ann, and I wanted to show her how important she was to me.”

The only problem, though, was that Al reportedly had a “mild” dog allergy. So, when he spoke with both his girlfriend and her brother, he said he would do his best to accommodate the allergy. However, he made it clear that under no circumstances would he ever get rid of Bo.

Now, he claims that both Ann and Al said they understood. Al even revealed that his allergy was “not too bad.”

So, they went ahead with the move-in. But, from the start, he realized that Al was not a great roommate.

First of all, his girlfriend’s brother seemed in no hurry to move out– since Al would spend all of his time either sleeping in or playing video games instead of conducting a job search.

In terms of chores, his girlfriend’s brother also never pitched in either. He claims that Al would do things like let laundry pile up and then “act confused” whenever he was told he had to do his own laundry.

Al would also eat all of the food he and Ann cooked but never help out with the cooking or purchase groceries.

“Worst, Al ordered lots of fast food for himself and left wrappers, bags, and old food in his room– which made the whole apartment smell,” he added.

Still, nothing could have prepared him for what happened about a month after Al moved in. At that point, his girlfriend’s brother claimed that his allergies were getting worse and worse. So, he was eventually asked if he would be willing to put his dog Bo in a shelter.

Now, he said that would absolutely not be happening and thought that would be the end of the discussion.

However, Ann reportedly kept pushing– claiming that they needed to consider the possibility in order to accommodate her brother’s needs.

He stuck to his guns, though, and told his girlfriend no. Then, she actually accused him of being a jerk for “choosing his dog over family.”

And after that, he ultimately snapped. He pointed out how Al is not his family and has instead been nothing but a hassle ever since moving in.

So, he told Ann that if she really wanted to babysit her older brother, then she could move out and find her own place.

In fact, he also revealed how his girlfriend actually had no legal right to stay at his apartment since her name was not on the lease.

Instead, he just paid the rent and allowed Ann to live there because she was attending graduate school and did not make enough money to afford a decent apartment by herself.

Still, Ann did not give up and kept trying to convince him to prioritize Al over his dog. So, out of desperation, he ended up giving his girlfriend an ultimatum: either her brother was gone within twenty-four hours, or he kicked both Ann and Al out of his apartment.

Now, ever since then, his girlfriend and his girlfriend’s brother have both moved out. And even though he and Ann have not officially broken up, he claims he has not heard from her in a few days.

He also realizes that the result might seem a bit harsh. However, he admitted that he really views his dog Bo as his family.

Bo was with him during some of the most challenging times in his life. Plus, his dog was a rescue– meaning that Bo had also been abandoned once before. And he refused to let that happen ever again.

“I feel nothing for Al, and while I thought I loved Ann, her willingness to get rid of someone I love as much as she made my feelings change,” he vented.

After he tried to explain this entire situation to his family, though, his parents and sister just did not understand. Instead, they told him that he should have at least considered the possibility of getting rid of Bo for Al’s sake. Plus, they claimed that they could have even watched Bo for the time being. That way, his dog did not have to go to a shelter.

Finally, they actually told him that if he really viewed Ann as his family– which he admits he did at one point– then he should have been willing to make that sacrifice.

Quite frankly, though, that was just not a sacrifice he was willing to make for his girlfriend. And now, he has been left wondering if that makes him a total jerk or not.

Do you think he was clear enough about his boundaries up front in terms of not getting rid of Bo? Why do you think his girlfriend did not take that seriously and kept pushing for him to rehome his dog? Do you think he had a right to give Ann an ultimatum after opening up his home? If you had been in his shoes, how would you have handled this situation?
