This twenty-five-year-old woman’s parents have been divorced for about fifteen years now.

Since then, her father has remarried a woman named Laura, who has two daughters– her stepsisters– Katie and Sam.

Her father has also grown really close with Katie and Sam and now considers them to be his own daughters.

Anyway, her grandfather on her father’s side has a family heirloom– a diamond– that once belonged to her great-grandmother. She also believes that the diamond is some sort of family miracle since her grandfather was able to find it following World War II.

Apparently, her grandfather had also sadly lost both his mother and sister during the war. So, he held onto the diamond and intended to give it to the next woman in his family– with hopes of it getting set into an engagement ring.

Now, it is crucial to note that her grandfather has a “thing” about blood relations and family. More specifically, if you are not blood-related, then you can be family. But you are not technically in the family.

“I am pretty sure this is somewhat related to his trauma, but it might be a generational thing,” she said.

So, due to that distinction, her grandfather’s sons were not allowed to use the diamond for any of their wives’ rings– since the diamond would then be owned by someone who was not blood-related.

Instead, she is her grandfather’s only biological granddaughter. In turn, it was always assumed that she would inherit the diamond.

Well, she finally got engaged last year, and she did not end up using her grandfather’s diamond for her engagement ring.

Apparently, the cut style and color were just not what she wanted for her ring, and her grandfather knew that.

In fact, he even offered to have the diamond recut just for her. But, she reportedly begged him not to make any changes to the heirloom.

“Because it is very valuable, and I know how much it means to him. And he agreed that when I get married, he will set it into a necklace to be worn on my wedding day instead,” she explained.

Now, though, her stepsister Katie is set to get engaged soon, and her father will most likely be walking Katie down the aisle.

So, it appears that her stepmom, Laura, decided to ask her grandfather if he would give Katie the diamond– since her father views Katie as one of his own daughters anyway.

According to her, though, her grandfather could not have been more against the idea. In fact, he literally said, “Not even over my dead body.”

So, that has since caused a lot of family drama. Namely, her father, Laura, and Katie are extremely upset. Plus, they have since asked her to get involved.

Apparently, her father suggested that she talk to her grandfather and ask if Katie could be allowed to use the diamond for a few reasons.

First, she never used the diamond for her own engagement ring. Second, her father considers Katie a real part of the family and will forever.

“So, it should be okay for her to have it, especially since Katie is older, so the ‘first’ woman, as it were,” she added.

But, even though her grandfather would probably cave if she asked him, she honestly decided to tell her father no. First of all, she claims that she would just feel too guilty. That diamond is the only piece her grandfather has left of his family, whom he lost due to the “most horrific circumstances” at just nine years old.

In fact, her grandfather’s family members do not even have graves. So, that diamond is all he has left to remember them by.

“And what right do any of us have to dictate what he does with it?” she vented.

It appears that she is the only one with this perspective, though. And now, her family is villainizing her for it.

She claims that her father, Laura, and Katie have all been texting and calling her nonstop about how upset they are that she is allowing her grandfather to exclude Katie from their family. Moreover, they pointed out how she already has an engagement ring– so they believe she should “help” her grandfather “soften” and allow her stepmom and stepsisters to be considered a real part of the family.

As of now, she still has not let everyone’s input sway her decision. However, she has been left wondering if refusing to butt in and pressure her grandfather to hand the diamond over to her stepsister is actually the right thing to do or not.

Is it ever okay to just ask for someone else’s belongings like that, especially when it is as valuable a family heirloom as her grandfather’s diamond? Do you think she has a right to want to respect her grandfather’s wishes– even if they make the rest of her family unhappy? How would you deal with this situation?
