This Teen’s Parents Spent Over $10,000 On Her Siblings’ Christmas Present But Got Her A Perfume She Cannot Even Wear Around Her Brother, So She Was Recently Honest About Her Upset, And It Caused A Huge Fight

This young seventeen-year-old girl has two older siblings– her sister Joanne, who is twenty-four, and her brother Cody, who is nineteen.
She claims that Joanne is “severely autistic” and also has Down syndrome. So, her sister reportedly has the mental age of a child between the ages of five and seven with “little to no hope” of maturing beyond that point.
This means that Joanne constantly needs to be monitored, has frequent meltdowns, and is sensory-seeking. Her brother, Cody, is also severely autistic and has the mental age of an eighteen-month-old.
Now, she claims that she is autistic, too. However, her support needs are relatively low compared to her siblings, and she is able to pass as neurotypical.
“So I feel like I get pushed aside a lot,” she said.
At home, Joanne and Cody share a bedroom since one parent always has to be with both of them. In turn, she gets her own bedroom, and her parents also have “their room,” which is really just overrun with her siblings’ belongings and only sleeps one of her parents at a time.
There was also a guest room in her house at one point. Honestly, though, she claimed that no one ever wants to have dinner at her home, let alone a sleepover. In turn, that room never really got any use.
So, for this past Christmas, her parents decided that “Santa” was going to convert the guest room into a sensory room as a gift for Joanne and Cody since that would allow them to have more space in their room.
Now, that whole endeavor cost her parents about ten thousand dollars. On top of that, her siblings also received some new toys, and Joanne even got a second brand new iPad– because “apparently she needs two at a time now.”

She, on the other hand, got a bottle of perfume which she cannot even use since the strong smells upset Cody.
Her parents also gave her a few pairs of socks, as well as a selection box. And honestly, she has been pretty upset about her Christmas gifts ever since.
“But I kind of understood that it was something my parents needed to make their lives easier and that I could do without,” she reasoned.
Well, that was until her grandparents on her mother’s side began asking her what she received for the holiday, and she told them.
Apparently, her grandparents had heard all about what her parents planned for Joanne and Cody, but they never heard anything about what she was supposed to open on Christmas morning.
So, after she revealed her presents, her grandparents were reportedly not too impressed. Then, they even ended up picking a fight with her parents– who attempted to defend themselves by claiming she would be happy with “a cardboard box and a marker.” Yikes!
Once her grandparents left, her parents confronted her about the situation, also. They asked if she was upset with her Christmas presents, and she told them the truth.
More specifically, she admitted that it was not the first time she was looked over and felt like she was given no thought as compared to her siblings.
“I also told them it was not fair they could spend ten grand on my siblings but less than a full percentage of that on me,” she added.
Despite her parents asking for her opinion, though, they clearly could not handle the truth– because they ended up freaking out on her.
Her parents claimed that she needed to get over herself and also be more understanding– since the world would not “cater” to what she wanted in life. Her parents also told her off for embarrassing them in front of her mom’s parents and accused her of behaving out of line.
So now, with the holiday drama continuing into the new year, she has been left wondering if still being upset about what she received for Christmas is justified or if she is in the wrong.
Do you think this is really about the Christmas presents she received, or the clear lack of thought her parents put into them? Does she have a right to feel upset by her parent’s lack of attention? If you were in her shoes, how would you handle this situation?
