So when they decided to move in together after school, they moved five hours away from John and her mom.
“When Serenity and I moved in together, she and I had talked about getting engaged,” he recalled.
“She told me she didn’t know if I wanted to be old school, but she’d like for me not to ask her stepfather for his blessing to marry me. I told her I wouldn’t have dreamed of asking him, and when we were ready to get engaged, I would plan something special. “
He complied with Serenity’s wishes when he recently proposed to her and didn’t consult with John. He gave her a heartfelt proposal and shared the news via social media. But once Serenity’s parents found out about the engagement, they were not happy.
Serenity’s mom and John were very upset about not being told about the proposal beforehand. Things got really crazy when John drove five hours to their house and showed up without telling them, just so he could yell at him for not following tradition and proposing to “his daughter” without his blessing.
He told John that the tradition calls for asking for the bride’s father’s blessing and that since Serenity’s father had passed away, it was impossible for him to do that. Then, he slammed the door in John’s face.
Serenity’s family is still very upset and has been harassing them on social media ever since.
Was he right to tell off John like that?
