She’s Furious And Frustrated With Her Younger Sister, Who Has Been Copying Nearly Everything About Her, Including Her Career

Sibling relationships can be quite complicated, and some of the complexities only get worse as we get older.

One woman is furious and frustrated with her younger sister, who has been copying many of her actions and is now trying to have the exact same career as her.

She’s 28 and has always had a rough relationship with her 26-year-old sister.

Growing up, her sister had a selfish attitude and often bullied her. Many of their friends and family would distance themselves from her sister, which only made their mom sympathize with and favor her.

As she got older, she went to school and landed herself a career she’s proud of. She currently lives in a different country than her family, which she did intentionally to avoid her sister.

But recently, her sister has been deciding to pursue exactly what she does and has been copying her life choices.

Last year, her sister decided to get her M.A. at the same university she did in the same country she moved to. However, this didn’t bother her too much since she had already graduated.

But then, when her sister started looking for a job, she stole her cover letter or ‘motivational letter’ she used in job interviews.

She shared it with her sister and some friends two years ago for some feedback and now deeply regrets that decision.

Then, things got progressively more frustrating.

“This year, she got a job at one of my previous agencies, thanks to the copied motivation letters, which she also sent to her boyfriend,” she said.

“She says that the job is boring, and if things do not work out, she can always just apply to a job with my current agency.”

Although she works in humanities and her sister works in engineering, her sister has still managed to find some kind of job in the agencies she worked for.

Then recently, she was a speaker at a conference related to the psychological effects of cancer. Although this doesn’t have to do with her sister’s career path, her sister still snuck into the conference, claiming to be someone close to someone with cancer.

All of this copying from her sister has been really weirding her out, and when she complains to her mom about it, she gets brushed off.

“All throughout, I have confronted my sister and encouraged her to have her own life while trying to persuade my mom to do the same, as she is the only one who has influence over her,” she explained.

“I am starting to sound like an evil stepsister, according to my mom, and I do recognize that this problem is starting to become a bit of an obsession for me.”

Instead of sympathizing with her or trying to understand why she’s so frustrated with her sister, her mom only tries to make her feel bad for getting angry.

Her mom continues to tell her that her sister is most likely trying to live like her because she admires her.

“I don’t want to end up with her working on my floor for the rest of my life and sending my kids to the same school district as hers, not because she is copying me, of course, but because on top of that, she has a bullying persona I do not want to interact with,” she added.

“[Although] I don’t know how to make this stop without sounding like an obsessive and bitter person.”

How should she handle this situation with her sister and continue to live independently?
