She’s Refusing To Let Her Sister Wear Their Late Mother’s Custom Wedding Gown Because She Inherited It And Doesn’t Want The Dress To Be Altered To Fit Her Sister

This woman’s mother worked in the fashion industry for a very long time and was an extremely talented seamstress. So, when her mother married her father, her mom’s employer decided to design and create a gorgeous wedding gown for her mom as a present.

“The dress is stunning,” she said.

“I know it sounds hyperbolic, but it’s honestly a work of art– hand-embroidered, hand-beaded, the whole nine yards.”

Then, before her mother passed away, all of her mother’s possessions were split up based on her and her sister’s personalities. On top of that, her mom was extremely clear in her will about who should inherit what.

So, she was ultimately gifted her mother’s wedding dress; meanwhile, her sister received her mom’s jewelry, including the pieces her mom had worn at her wedding.

But, more recently, her sister got engaged. Then, she was ultimately asked to gift her mom’s wedding dress to her sister for the big day.

Honestly, though, she flat-out told her sister no for a variety of reasons.

First of all, the gown was specifically gifted to her. Plus, it is one of the sole remaining meaningful possessions that she has from her mom.

Secondly, she claimed that her sister is between three and four sizes larger than her mother.

“Nothing against my sister– she’s healthy and beautiful– but wearing the dress would require her to let the dress out at the seams and require much of the embroidery and beading to be destroyed and re-done,” she explained.

“I do not have faith that the dress can be properly restored and maintained.”

Finally, she didn’t want to hand over the dress because her sister implied that it would be a gift. In other words, the gown would then become her sister’s, and she is not okay with that.

Still, in terms of the gift confusion, she did ask her sister if that meant she would then receive some of her mother’s jewelry in return. However, her sister just said no– which really rubbed her the wrong way.

“And I don’t actually want to trade. The dress has too much sentimental value to me,” she admitted.

“I just wanted to see where my sister’s heart was at, and it felt selfish to me.”

Anyway, that’s why she wound up refusing to gift her sister the dress. And since then, her sister has badmouthed her to her entire family.

Apparently, her sister won’t stop crying to her dad and saying nasty things about how selfish she is. Even worse, her sister brought up the fact that she is a widow who will likely never remarry. So, her sister claimed she had no other use for the gown!

Yet, while she does feel justified in her decision, the backlash she’s received from other family members has caused her to second-guess herself.

“Based on what I’ve been hearing from my family, I feel like I’m really ruining her wedding, and it’s caused a strain between me and my father,” she vented.

So now, she’s been left wondering whether she is being “needlessly stubborn” and refusing to let her sister wear her mother’s wedding dress really makes her a jerk.

How would you feel in this situation? Would you want an inherited dress that you care about to be gifted away and altered? Was it right for her sister to even ask that?
