Sending your kid (who’s not really a kid anymore) off to college is like that heart-wrenching scene in every coming-of-age film: a blend of pride, excitement, and a dose of sadness.

But, while they are stepping into a new chapter of their lives, that doesn’t mean they’re too grown-up for a well-curated care package from home.

And if we’re being real, college is filled with just as many nerve-wracking challenges as moments of fabulous freedom.

So, what better way to show your love and support than by sending over a box full of comforting goodies and useful items?

Curating Your Box

Putting together the perfect care package can be a bit like trying to solve a Rubik’s Cube.

You should try to strike a delicate balance between things for utility, fun, and a touch of nostalgia.

Here’s a rundown of items that will score you an A+ with your college student.

Snacks, Snacks, And More Snacks

Listen, campus food might be fine and dandy, but there’s something deeply comforting about munching on childhood favorites.

Think along the lines of granola bars, microwave popcorn, and those chocolate chip cookies that disappear within a day.

You can also add in some healthier options like dried fruits or almonds to keep the guilt at bay.

Study Aids

Highlighters, Post-it notes, and pens may seem like they’d be a dime a dozen at college. But with roommates, tons of classes, and being constantly on the go, it’s easy for students to run low on essentials not long after moving into their dorm.

That’s why including a small assortment of stationery will be super useful. Plus, it will also remind your student that you care about their academic success.

You can include things that suit their personality, like cute pens or themed notebooks. You could also get your kid a lap desk for those late-night study sessions.

Self-Care Essentials

College is a high-stress environment, with most students finally venturing out on their own and living alone for the very first time.

Amidst the social pressures and school demands, it’s easy for students to feel burnt out, down, and like they simply need a break.

In these moments, self-care is critical. And by sending your child some self-care essentials, you are teaching them that prioritizing their mental health is of utmost importance.

You can throw in things like skincare masks, a nice body lotion, an ice roller, a muscle roller, or even a stress ball. Whatever you think your kid will actually use.

Light-Hearted Distractions

Dorm rooms are notorious for being small, but that doesn’t mean they have to be boring. Including little things like a deck of cards, a board game, or a fun craft can help your kid feel more at home in their space.

Games are also great for encouraging your child to step out of their shell and socialize with other students; meanwhile, crafts and other activities will provide your kid with another hobby outlet outside of school.

A Touch Of Home

What makes your child feel most at home will entirely depend upon their personality and interests. However, you can always keep it simple, too.

Getting a nice framed photo of your family, sending a pawprint of your family dog, or even including a little handwritten note can work wonders for homesickness.

Oh, And Gift Cards

Perhaps the best thing any college student can receive is a trusty gift card.

For some parents, this may feel impersonal or even unnecessary. But trust me, if you are able to pre-finance some purchases for your college student, they will seriously appreciate it.

First of all, there is likely a coffee shop like Dunkin Donuts or Starbucks on campus. There is definitely a school store, too, as well as grocery stores and chain stores– like Target and Walmart– in the area.

Helping your child feel less stressed about grabbing an on-campus coffee with friends or picking up some essentials at the store is a great way to show your support from afar. Plus, it’s both practical and a treat at the same time.
