Since then, he got a call from them explaining that if he moves back in, he will, in fact, need to pay them the full rent that he typically pays at his own place.
“This was alarming to me as I only have 4 weeks before I move back now, and this has been a bit of a blow to my saving plans,” he said.
His parents explained they are struggling to continue paying their mortgage payments on their house now that they are paying for his brother’s school and his mother can no longer work.
They worry that they cannot keep up with the payments without his help. This, amongst other issues, is making him question what he should do.
“It’s clear my parents are struggling with depression, and I’ve watched them slip further and further into alcoholism. Every time I’ve gone back home in the last two years, the amount of wine I see them both get through is worrying,” he added.
He then made the decision to let his parents know that he will not be moving back in with them and will continue to pay his rent and live alone. This choice was not received well by his parents, and the rest of the family thinks that he isn’t doing the right thing by ignoring his parent’s needs.
Do you think he is in the right, or do you think he should agree to help his parents with their financial struggles?
