She Rejected Her Stepdad’s Offer To Pay For Her Wedding Because She Knew He Just Wanted To Walk Her Down The Aisle Instead Of Her Grandfather

While you may grow to become very close to your step-parents or step-siblings, there are certain roles or events in your life you may still want to reserve for blood relatives.

One young woman upset her mom and stepdad after rejecting her stepdad’s offer to pay for her upcoming wedding since she knew he was trying to persuade her to let him walk her down the aisle.

She’s 27 and is engaged to her fiancé Raf.

“Raf and I are paying for our wedding ourselves,” she explained.

“That was always something we planned on doing, and we have saved for a number of years to afford a nice wedding.”

There is something else she’s always wanted to do at her wedding, and is determined to follow through with her decision.

When she was only six, her dad sadly passed away. Since then, she knew that when her wedding day rolled around, she’d wanted her granddad, her dad’s father, to walk her down the aisle and take on all the ‘father of the bride’ roles.

She’s always had a special relationship with her granddad and has never changed her mind about wanting him super involved in her wedding, even when her stepdad came into her life when she was seven.

While she cares for her stepdad, he’s never felt like a ‘replacement father,’ and she still wants to save the traditional wedding roles for her granddad. When she broke the news that he would be the one giving her away at her wedding to her mom and stepdad, they were both very upset.

Although she requested a special parent’s dance for her mom and stepdad at her wedding and plans on thanking them in her speech, her stepdad is upset that he won’t take on any more ‘father of the bride’ roles.

“He said after being in my life since I was seven and being my stepdad since I was nine, he feels he is more deserving of the role,” she recalled.

“I told him I understood he was upset, but I had made my decision. He said it was childish to keep to a decision I made as a baby and never open myself up to alternatives. When I didn’t give in, they got a little huffy, and I decided to leave to give them some space.”

Later, her stepdad approached her and told her she should let him pay for her wedding. He had never brought up paying before, and immediately, she could tell he was offering to pay because he figured it would allow him to do whatever he wanted in her wedding.

This offer from her stepdad was especially jarring, as she hardly took any money from him growing up and barely asked him for anything. Now that he wasn’t getting what he wanted, he was willing to pay for it.

“He said it was bad luck to pay for your own wedding,” she said.

“I told him we were a more modern couple and had chosen to pay for our own wedding with no financial contributions from anyone. He was angry, and he left. Ever since, he and my mom have said I disrespected him immensely by denying him the right to pay.”

Now, her mom is angry with her for rejecting her stepdad’s generous and traditional offer, and her stepdad is saying she ruined her wedding for him.

Should she feel bad for not allowing her stepdad to pay for the wedding, or was she right to stand her ground?
