This 27-year-old man’s sister, Alexis, who is 25, had a baby boy last year. He is engaged to a woman named Sophie, who is 26. Alexis wasn’t dating the man who got her pregnant, so even before the birth, she knew that she would be a single mother.

Sometimes, the father of her baby visits the baby, and he pays her child support. Alexis and the father came up with the amount he would pay on their own prior to the birth, but the amount isn’t substantial. A lot more money would be required to support a baby.

Two weeks after Alexis had her baby, she told him that she was struggling and needed help. It was too difficult for her to parent completely on her own.

Their other siblings still live with their parents, so there wouldn’t be enough space for Alexis and her son to move in, too.

So, Alexis asked him if he would let her and her son live with him for several weeks while she heals and gets into a groove with single parenthood. At first, he assumed that Sophie wouldn’t want Alexis and her son to live with them for a long time.

But when he mentioned the idea to Sophie, she told him that she empathized with Alexis’ situation and would feel terrible if they didn’t support her during this tough time. Now, Alexis and her son have been living with him and Sophie for 10 months.

“Neither of us expected her to stay this long, but whenever we’d have a discussion with Alexis about whether she was planning on finding a place and going back to work, she’d rant about how hard motherhood is and how she could not fathom adding something else to her plate,” he said.

He sees Alexis’ perspective because his nephew cries a lot and doesn’t sleep regularly. However, he and Sophie can’t handle this situation anymore.

Their entire world has been turned upside down so that they can allow space for Alexis and her son, and there isn’t that much space available.

Their apartment only has one bedroom, so he and Sophie put a bed and other supplies in their living room for Alexis and her son.

“She asked us to put up a curtain so she could at least get some privacy, and we did. So, we haven’t had a living room for the past 10 months. We’ve been eating, relaxing, and everything else in our bedroom. We can’t cook or so much as get a snack when the baby is asleep because there’s only a curtain separating them from the kitchen,” he explained.

He and Sophie thought about the possibility of allowing Alexis and her son to have their bedroom for the time being, but since Sophie has her remote job set up in their bedroom, that wouldn’t have worked.

She wouldn’t have been able to have calls for her job in the living room just in case someone walked in and distracted her while she was on important work calls.

Finally, he had a talk with Alexis and questioned her about whether she was thinking ahead about job searching and finding her own place in the near future. In response, she told him that she couldn’t pay rent by herself with a part-time job. He tried to help her come up with some solutions for ways to afford it, but none of the solutions he came up with seemed satisfactory for her.

As the conversation progressed, he put his foot down and said that she had stayed with him and Sophie too long and she couldn’t continue living with them. He added that he would do what he could to support her, but this living situation couldn’t continue, especially since it’s been nearly a year.

“She’s saying that she won’t ever make enough to pay rent, bills, and daycare as a single mom. I suggested that she get more child support from the dad and take him to court if he refuses. She wasn’t fond of the idea because she thought it’d make him not want to see his son, and she didn’t want her son to grow up without a father,” he shared.

Then, he let Alexis know that if she wasn’t willing to consider any of the ideas that he gave her or any other possibilities that she came up with on her own, she had until April to find a job and move out of his and Sophie’s apartment.

Alexis told him this wasn’t a fair timeline, and she accused him of forcing her and her son to be homeless. He repeated that he would support her, but he would no longer allow her to live with him and Sophie.

What advice would you give him?
