From this 23-year-old man’s perspective, his younger sister, Gigi, 20, has always been their parents’ favorite child, while he feels like they were constantly let down by him.

His parents, Julia, 46, and his father, Harris, 48, named his sister after their grandmother, Gigi, who sadly died one week before his sister was born.

So, his parents honored his late grandmother, and he believes they cared more about his sister simply because she was a girl.

Because he could always sense that his parents liked Gigi better and didn’t feel proud of him throughout his life, he never had a close bond with his family.

At the end of 2022, he proposed to his now-fiancée, Remi, 22, and their wedding is coming up soon. Luckily, his family was happy for the two of them and supported their relationship.

He and Remi have been planning their wedding all year, and they’re looking forward to being husband and wife. They settled on a date and invited their guests.

They planned out the food to serve for dinner, and Remi found her dream wedding dress. Everything was organized, and the wedding date worked for their loved ones. Remi’s family members live in France, so it was important that they were available to attend.

“The problem is that last month, Gigi was arrested for a DUI, and she got one month in jail. Of course, my family is on Gigi’s side, saying it’s unfair as she’s only a kid,” he said.

However, he pointed out that Gigi is a grown woman, so since she received jail time, she should use that month behind bars to reflect on the consequences of her reckless actions.

He added that she needs to acknowledge that she could have severely harmed someone or herself if she got into an accident. Gigi was under the influence of illegal substances and later claimed that someone pushed her into doing it, and she caved.

His sister is now going to be in jail for his and Remi’s wedding, and he is understandably disappointed about this.

He would be thrilled for Gigi to be able to attend and celebrate one of the most important days of his life.

Even though there has been tension over the years, and he hasn’t been as close to his family because of it, she’s still his sister and means a lot to him.

“My parents said it’s unfair that I would have my wedding while she’s in jail, and I should change it so she could go. I discussed this with Remi, but we both agreed it’s fair too late, and her family already booked their tickets to come see the wedding,” he explained.

After talking with Remi, they both decided that it wouldn’t be fair to the nearly 40 wedding guests who planned to travel and have availability for their wedding date, and changing their date because of his sister’s jail time wouldn’t be worth the anxiety and chaos.

When he explained this to his family, they told him that he was being impolite, and they warned him that if he and Remi didn’t move their wedding date, they wouldn’t be attending the wedding anymore since his sister wouldn’t be able to make it.

This hurt him, and he said that he wouldn’t talk to them anymore if they wouldn’t be there for his wedding.

In his view, this was yet another example of his parents favoring Gigi instead of him, and he felt like they weren’t showing support for his wedding by threatening not to come to the ceremony. He told them all of this, adding how mean he thought they were being.

The fighting with his family continued back and forth for a while, and he ended the conversation by reiterating that he would cut off contact with them if they didn’t attend his wedding.

Upon reflection, he wondered if he had gone too far. Plus, his parents and some of his aunts and uncles have been texting him in anger about his decision not to shift the wedding date so that Gigi can come. The way they’re reacting is making him feel unloved.

After this, his mother reached out to Remi, criticizing her for refusing to switch the wedding date. His mother claimed that he had gone against the wishes of his family and betrayed them. Remi was so hurt by this text that she even thought about canceling their wedding altogether.

He was enraged that his mother was disrespecting Remi, so he texted his mother to ask why she thought her behavior was acceptable.

She responded, saying that he wasn’t being a man, so she took the initiative to confront Remi about how she felt.

Then, his mother claimed that Remi was the one demanding that they keep their original wedding date and that he was too scared to do what his own family wanted.

“I told her, ‘No one is forcing me. The fact that you thought it was okay to even message Remi is stupid. I always knew how entitled you were, and I can’t even say I’m surprised. We all know who your golden child is, and thanks to you, she’s in jail.’ She said, ‘Your sister is in jail for no reason, and you should support her while she’s going through these hard times,'” he shared.

His mother shamed him for supposedly excluding his sister from his wedding, and she doubled down on her decision not to go to his wedding.

He told her that he didn’t care if she and his father didn’t come and that he was accustomed to them only caring about Gigi.

When his mother said he should feel terrible about his behavior and that he was a “‘jealous brat,'” he said that the only thing he felt bad about was that she was his mom. He proceeded to block her after this.

The next day, his father texted him and questioned whether he was planning to switch the wedding date.

He reiterated that he and Remi would do no such thing, especially just to accommodate one person. His father pointed out that the “one person” in question was his sister.

But he countered that it wouldn’t be fair to change things around for his sister when 40 people wouldn’t be able to attend the wedding if they changed the date.

He also called his sister spoiled, which his father didn’t agree with, adding that he needed to support his family. According to his father, Remi wasn’t family yet.

After this, he told his father that he’d never considered him, his mother, or Gigi to be his family in the first place and that he was closer to Remi’s parents.

His father tried to convince him to change his mind, expressing that Gigi was struggling and was saddened that she wouldn’t be able to go to his wedding if they didn’t change the date.

He argued that it was Gigi’s own bad decisions that landed her in jail, but his father also brought up Gigi’s explanation that she only consumed substances before driving because of peer pressure, which he dismissed as his sister refusing to take accountability for her actions.

When his father told him that he and his mother didn’t raise him to act like this, he questioned whether they even raised him since they ignored him in favor of Gigi.

His father thought he was overreacting, saying that he and his mother loved him, but he told him he never felt like they loved him.

He blocked his father after repeating that he wouldn’t change the wedding date, and his father said he and his mother wouldn’t attend if that was the case.

Also, he told his father that he’d already uninvited him and his mother from this wedding regardless of if they wanted to attend.

What would you have done if you had been in his shoes?
