This woman has two sons and is now pregnant with her third child. She had a previous pregnancy, which ended in loss. She and her husband were planning to have a gender reveal party, and her mother-in-law wanted to be the only person who knew the gender ahead of time, so she agreed to this plan.

Her husband’s mother purchased confetti cannons to shoot off blue or pink confetti, indicating the gender of their baby during the party. This would be the last child she and her husband would have, and they planned to have a more intimate gathering with their close friends and family.

Their youngest child was born amid the pandemic, so they weren’t able to do fun, celebratory events with loved ones. They were looking forward to getting everyone together for the gender reveal. While she would love to have a third son, she would be thrilled to have the experience of being a mother to a daughter.

Everyone gathered in her and her husband’s house on the day of the party. Finally, it was time for the big reveal with the confetti cannons.

“My mother-in-law hands us both a cannon. My husband gets his to go first, and all I see is pink confetti. The sweetest surprise of my life with a daughter flashed in my mind, hugging my husband, tears shed. I was shaking, happy,” she said.

Normally, even when she receives good news, she manages to remain relaxed and composed. Her mother was sobbing with joy. It was such a shock to see the pink confetti because she assumed she was pregnant with another son.

A few minutes later, her husband’s mother reminded her that she still had to set off her confetti cannon. In all the shock and happiness of her husband’s cannon releasing the pink confetti, she completely forgot to set hers off. Ideally, they were both supposed to set them off together simultaneously.

“I’m assuming it was also pink because I was not having twins. But instead, it’s blue. I instantly regret my initial ecstatic response. Why are there both colors now? She then hands us the ‘real’ cannons, and they both pop blue. Of course, I can’t match my previous energy. I hugged my husband and the people around me and excused myself. And I cried,” she explained.

She sobbed for hours after her mother-in-law’s prank, but she acknowledged that she was thrilled to be able to give birth to any children at all, and she understands that a healthy pregnancy should be her main concern.

Their second son had a birth defect, so during the first year after he was born, they had to go to and from the hospital often to fix it, and to this day, they still keep an eye on it. So, she is aware of how important both her health and the health of her baby are.

However, she can’t help but feel depressed that the hope of parenting a daughter wasn’t going to come to fruition.

For several moments, she thought it was her reality before she realized her husband’s mother had played a joke on them. Now, she felt as if she had to mourn the loss of this dream.

Her husband had also been thrilled when he thought they were going to have a daughter and was upset about his mother’s prank.

In addition, she clarified that she deeply loves her son already and isn’t disappointed to have another son.

She’s crushed that she was tricked into believing their baby was a girl when that wasn’t true. Now, she feels like a bad person for being so hurt, and she also feels humiliated that this happened in front of a ton of people.

Unfortunately, someone filmed her and her husband’s initial reaction to the pink confetti, so the footage isn’t their reaction to the real gender of their child, so it’s not genuine.

The video captured how she and her husband reacted before they realized they weren’t having a daughter after all.

Throughout the rest of the party, her mother-in-law just sat on her phone, and she said sorry before leaving when the party was winding down.

Apparently, her husband’s mother intended for her husband to have the cannon with blue confetti with the hope that his cannon would go off first.

This admission made it clear that her mother-in-law knew in advance that the prank could be upsetting for them. She wanted to ignore her husband’s mother, but to keep the peace, she hugged her before walking off.

Her mother-in-law’s prank was so shocking because, before this, the two of them got along really well. She has done a lot to support her mother-in-law over the years, and she hopes that her prank wasn’t meant to be malicious.

Upon reflection, she doesn’t see how this prank would have been funny, even if she and her husband did what they were supposed to and set off the confetti cannons in unison.

If they’d done this, blue and pink confetti would have been set off at once, just causing them and all of the guests to be utterly baffled.

In her view, if her mother-in-law wanted to play some sort of joke on them, she could have just gotten a gender-neutral confetti cannon instead.

“The fact that I had the rug ripped out from under me (with an audience) is what I’m upset about. After two of the same gender, I’m assuming parents would be happy for either. But I think many parents would have a little spark of hope to experience the other side,” she shared.

After the party, she told her husband that she wanted a break from seeing or communicating with his mother so that she could process the situation.

What advice would you give her?
