Recently, this 25-year-old woman’s brother, 23, and her sister-in-law, also 23, married, and she thinks they’re both compatible and wonderful together. They got engaged at Disney World, and once they broke the news to everyone, they immediately started wedding planning. Her sister-in-law’s mother gifted her $20,000 for the wedding, which allowed her to purchase the bridesmaid dresses she preferred.

“She asked her four best friends and me to be her bridesmaids and presented the dress options to me because I was the biggest, and she wanted to make sure they fit,” she said.

The two dresses were different colors, one light and one dark, and they were the same brand, size, and style. While the lighter dress fit her comfortably, the darker dress was too tight-fitting and short.

She thought there had been a mistake with the sizing, and her sister-in-law, who agreed when she saw it that it was way too revealing and not a good fit, told her that this was the largest size available in this particular dress. They both knew that this dress wasn’t an option for her and after she changed, her sister-in-law hung up the dresses.

She always tried on the lighter dress during fittings. Evidently, her sister-in-law forgot that the darker dress didn’t fit her because this was the bridesmaid’s dress that she had chosen for everyone to wear, and she had made this decision only a week before the wedding.

Her sister-in-law’s mother scheduled a last-minute appointment for her to be fitted for the darker dress. She and the seamstress panicked when she tried the dress on because even though she’d lost five pounds, she’d gained cleavage. The babydoll-style dress was even shorter than it had been before, now stopping a couple of inches past her hips.

“The fabric didn’t have any extra to let out seams, and the only thing we could do was replace the straps to make them a couple of inches longer. The chest puckered so much that we sewed the slip part of the dress to the outer fabric to make it less noticeable,” she explained.

At the end of the fitting, her seamstress advised her to wear shorts underneath the dress because there wasn’t anything else she could do to alter the length. She informed her sister-in-law about the state of the dress, and her sister-in-law claimed that it probably wasn’t as awful as she was describing, adding that she needed to just suck it up.

When she expressed that she didn’t feel comfortable standing up at the wedding anymore, her sister-in-law freaked out, getting all of her immediate and extended family members involved because they were already in town for the wedding. They all reached out to her to persuade her to change her mind. Eventually, she said that she would still be a bridesmaid on the condition that she wear shorts underneath the dress.

On the day of the wedding, all of the bridesmaids were together to get ready. She put on shorts under her dress, and when her sister-in-law saw this, she lost it, pointing out that the shorts were visible.

Her sister-in-law said that she wasn’t allowed to wear the shorts and she needed to “stop being dramatic.” During her sister-in-law’s outburst, the other bridesmaids were witnessing the whole thing, and they gave her sympathetic looks but didn’t verbally jump to her defense against her sister-in-law’s anger.

“So, I took off the shorts and held the hem as I walked and the flowers low. I hid in the back of all the photos, and the groomsman who walked down the aisle with me held my elbow instead of lacing our arms so that I could still hold my hem and my bouquet. Immediately after photos and the ceremony, and with permission from the bride and groom from the day before, I changed,” she shared.

The dress she changed into was the same color as the original one and had no detailing, but it was longer. Later, her sister-in-law saw her change of dress and was enraged, scolding her in whispers that she was “dramatic” and destroying her wedding, then ordering her to get out.

Unfortunately, she hadn’t driven herself, so she sat outside the venue until the end of the reception because she didn’t want her sister-in-law to get angrier with her.

Since she has autism, she acknowledged that she struggles in social scenarios at times and wondered if her sister-in-law was right about making too big of a deal about the length of the dress.

Upon reflection, she also wondered if it would have been better for her to have stuck with her original choice to step down from the wedding altogether instead of giving in when her family begged her to reconsider.

Once the wedding photos came back, her sister-in-law hung one of them on the wall. She realized that she’d been photoshopped out of the photo entirely.

Not long ago, her sister-in-law was walking down memory lane and blissfully thinking back on memories of her wedding, involving her in the discussion and asking if she remembered how fantastic the bridesmaid’s dresses looked. She had no idea if her sister-in-law truly didn’t recall the drama involved with the bridesmaid’s dresses or if she intended to be cruel.

One day, she was with her parents and brother and mentioned that she saw she was photoshopped out of a wedding picture.

They echoed her sister-in-law’s accusation about her being “dramatic,” saying that since it was her sister-in-law’s special day, she had the right to hang wedding photos in her home if she wanted. Then, they told her to quit whining and move on because it’s all in the past now.

However, she hadn’t discussed the wedding since it happened, so in her view, she hadn’t been whining about it incessantly or anything.

But because of her family’s comments, she’s unsure if she was ranting too much, and she’s concerned that she possibly made her sister-in-law’s wedding more difficult and that she could have handled it differently.

She hypothesized that her sister-in-law may have chosen to photoshop her out of the picture so that she didn’t think of the negative memories from the day whenever she looked at it.

Do you think she was wrong to change out of her bridesmaid’s dress after the photos and ceremony?
