His Girlfriend Took Their Border Collie To A Herding Class And Suddenly Wants To Raise Her Own Flock Of 20 Sheep, But He Thinks It’s A Ridiculous Idea

This 51-year-old man and his girlfriend, Lana, who is 29, have been living together for a few years now. They also both work full-time, but their schedule structures are a bit different.
“My job requires me to go on business trips for three to five days a few times a month, and her job requires presence at the office,” he said.
As for where they live, he and Lana reside on a large property. So, two years ago, his girlfriend decided that she wanted to get a dog.
He claimed to be pretty knowledgeable about canines, too, which is why they settled on getting a border collie– since this breed is known for being very smart and trainable.
Just a few months ago, Lana also decided to take their dog to a herding class. It was clear that the pup loved herding all of the sheep, too, and his girlfriend was obviously intrigued.
“Lana was fascinated with how cleverly he handled them [the sheep],” he recalled.
That’s why, following the class, his girlfriend came up with a pretty wild idea. Apparently, Lana now wants to buy her own small flock of sheep– or around 20– for their border collie to herd.
She believes that she could start shearing them and getting homemade milk and cheese. Then, at the same time, their dog would be constantly stimulated and entertained.
Quite frankly, though, he just doesn’t think that’s a good idea. For some context, Lana grew up as a “city girl;” meanwhile he was raised on a ranch.

So, he understands just how much work it takes to own farm animals. His girlfriend, on the other hand, only saw a living sheep for the very first time during their dog’s herding class!
“And 20 heads of sheep is a massive hassle, and we both have full-time jobs,” he reasoned.
“The only plausible way for it to work is if we hire a farmhand, another financial loss, considering that the revenue from 20 heads would barely be able to cover the costs of keeping them.”
Due to all of this, he ultimately turned down Lana’s idea and tried to explain to her why the plan just wouldn’t work out. He even presented her with an “elaborate business strategy” to prove his point.
Regardless, his girlfriend kept saying that it wasn’t meant to be a business; it was supposed to be a hobby that didn’t make any money.
In response to that, he just told Lana that it would be a very expensive hobby.
Plus, he pointed out how they make a total of $140,000 per year combined. So, there’s no way they could run a little farm for the fun of it.
“Not to mention, she’s not the type of person to stand knee-deep in sheep [feces], and I had enough of that back in the day,” he added.
Still, his girlfriend just keeps accusing him of being unsupportive of her hobbies– even though he swears that’s not true.
For instance, he supported her when she showed an interest in dog agility by building a dog training course on their property. He’s also always buying her new fragrances because Lana is obsessed with perfumes.
“But the sheep thing is honestly ridiculous,” he vented.
So now, with his girlfriend upset with him, he can’t help but wonder if refusing to get sheep is really so crazy or not.
Do you agree that buying and caring for 20 sheep is a massive undertaking? Does it sound like his girlfriend is ready to take on that responsibility? What would you do in his shoes?
