He Lied To His Ex-Girlfriend About Adding Her Name To His Apartment Lease, So After She Broke Up With Him, He Just Kicked Her Out

This 26-year-old guy is currently a law student and lives in a major city. But, he was previously dating a woman named Mindy, who was actually his high school sweetheart.
While they pursued college, his ex-girlfriend decided to stay in their hometown while she finished her degree. Then, about a year ago, she moved to his city and started living with him in his apartment.
At that point, Mindy also wanted her name to be added to his lease. However, he had some reservations about the idea.
“I wasn’t fully on board because she just moved here, and things could happen,” he recalled.
Still, his ex kept insisting that she be added to the lease, so he found a loophole and drew up a sublease agreement.
This was obviously different than what Mindy wanted, but she didn’t realize the difference and happily agreed to sign the document – thinking her name was going on the lease. Afterward, things were fine in their relationship for a while, too.
That was until just yesterday, though, when Mindy approached him and said she wanted to break up.
“I was confused because I thought our relationship was great,” he explained.
“She said it was because she just needed more time to be young and not tied down.”

Apparently, some of her best friends had just moved to his city, too. So, he figured it was them who talked Mindy into ending their relationship.
Regardless, he just accepted that she wanted to break up and proceeded to ask when she planned to move out. This took Mindy by surprise, and she claimed she wasn’t planning to move out. Rather, she thought their agreement could remain the same, and she would just move into the apartment’s spare room.
“But I told her I’m not paying 75% of the rent anymore if we’re not dating. I explained to her that this is now an equal roommate situation,” he said.
Well, Mindy claimed she couldn’t afford that and that she didn’t have anywhere else to go. And he put his foot down, saying that wasn’t his problem and that she either needed to pay 50% of the rent or move out.
This pushed Mindy to claim that he wasn’t the landlord, so he couldn’t just kick her out. But he just responded by telling his ex that she was wrong.
“I am actually her landlord, and she didn’t sign a lease agreement but a sublease, and I have every right to kick her out,” he revealed.
Then, he told Mindy for the last time that she either needed to pay 50% of the rent or else she had 30 days to pack up her stuff and leave.
This caused his ex to finally leave his apartment, and she hasn’t been back since. She did text him more recently, claiming she’d be returning to pick up the rest of her things.
However, Mindy called him a jerk for lying to her about their lease agreement. So now, he can’t help but wonder if that really was the wrong thing to do.
Do you think it was wrong of him to lie or not? Can you understand why he didn’t want to continue paying 75% of the rent if he and his ex were no longer dating? What would you have done in his shoes?
