Have you ever had a roommate who let their partner stay in your home for nights on end without paying rent or contributing to household duties?

It can be extremely frustrating when this happens, and it can even jeopardize your positive relationship with your roommate.

One young woman recently kicked her sister’s boyfriend out of their apartment after he refused to pay rent or help with household chores.

She’s 25-years-old and lives with her younger sister, Rachel, in a two-bedroom apartment.

She and Rachel have always been close and decided to move into their small space together after graduating from college to save money.

While things started fine, unfortunately, their living arrangement became very tense after Rachel brought her boyfriend around more frequently.

Rachel is dating a 24-year-old guy named Jake, who’s been spending a lot of time at their apartment.

While she didn’t mind Jake hanging around at first, she noticed that things had started getting out of hand.

“He’s here every night, uses our utilities, eats our food, and has even started bringing his laundry over,” she said.

“The problem is, Jake doesn’t contribute at all. He doesn’t pay rent, doesn’t help with groceries, and he certainly doesn’t help with chores.”

The situation is especially frustrating, as Jake lives in their apartment as if he’s a roommate but doesn’t follow through with typical roommate duties.

Anytime she’s tried talking to Rachel about her feelings. Rachel tends to ignore her and defends Jake. Rachel usually reminds her that Jake is going through a tough time and needs support from her.

However, she has been staying with them for months on end, and she’s beginning to feel taken advantage of since she and Rachel split their bills 50-50. Additionally, Jake has his own place.

Things came to a head when she and Rachel hosted a small get-together with their friends last weekend.

“I asked Jake to help out with some of the preparations, and he flat out refused, saying he was too tired from work,” she recalled.

“Meanwhile, Rachel and I spent hours cleaning, cooking, and setting up.”

When the party, which Jake happily participated in, was over, he went straight to bed in their apartment, leaving her and Rachel to clean up the mess.

She finally snapped and confronted Jake the next morning, telling him he needed to start contributing to their apartment or find somewhere else to stay.

Jake became defensive, telling her that the apartment duties were not his responsibility since he didn’t officially live there.

It didn’t take long for Rachel to chime in and accuse her of being too harsh with Jake.

“We had a huge argument, and I ended up telling Jake to leave and not come back until he was ready to pull his weight,” she added.

“Rachel was livid and said I was being unreasonable and had no right to kick Jake out. She’s been giving me the cold shoulder ever since.”

Should she feel bad for kicking Jake out of her apartment, or was it the right thing to do?
