Charlotte’s Web might’ve made spiders seem cute, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. Deep in the jungles of Central Africa, there lurks a creature from folklore that is so creepy and monstrous it’ll make you want to avoid the outdoors altogether, even if you live on the opposite side of the world.

According to legend, the J’ba Fofi spiders live in the Congo and build huge, intricate webs spanning from tree to tree in order to ensnare their prey, which is said to include humans.

Adult J’ba Fofi spiders’ leg span reaches up to four or five feet. They resemble giant, dark brown tarantulas with sharp fangs and potent venom.

Their eggs are pale yellow in color and are the size and shape of peanut shells. Young J’ba Fofi spiders are bright yellow with purple abdomens.

Local tales suggest that these large insects were more numerous, but their population has dwindled over the decades due to human activity and habitat loss.

What makes the J’ba Fofi so formidable is its remarkable intelligence. These spiders are very deliberate with their traps. They camouflage their webs with leaves and even dig burrows in the ground lined with webbing to act as a sort of trip line.

The native people of the Congo tell stories about the J’ba Fofi coming into their villages, killing their livestock, and taking children and small animals. They construct their huts with thatched roofs and tightly spaced walls to prevent the spider from getting in.

There have been multiple reported sightings throughout the 20th century. The oldest reported sighting took place in 1890. Arthur Simes, an English missionary, was traveling to a village on the shore of Lake Nyasa in Uganda, when several of his companions became stuck in a massive web.

Two large spiders appeared as Simes struggled to cut through the web. They attacked the men trapped in the web, forcing Simes to shoot his pistol at the spiders to scare them away. Unfortunately, the men were bitten by the spiders and died shortly after.

One of the most well-known sightings came from British explorer Reginald Lloyd and his wife in 1938. They were driving down the road when they encountered an enormous spider that left behind a trail of silk and footprints as it passed in front of their vehicle.

The legend of the J’ba Fofi has given rise to a number of theories. Some suggest that the J’ba Fofi could be a case of misidentification of known tarantulas, large land crabs, or other forest creatures.

The lack of physical evidence of the spiders has led many people to believe that it is just a myth.

Others argue that the J’ba Fofi could be a surviving species of a prehistoric spider that existed during an era when oxygen levels were higher.

Whether the J’ba Fofi is a real species or simply the product of folklore, it continues to instill fear into people’s hearts and remains a symbol of the unknown.
