Eventually, Jo Ann gave Ali permission to walk to work, but she made it clear to her daughter that she had to go right there and not make any other stops.
Jo Ann then asked Ali to let her know when she got there safely and to let her know when she should swing by to get her since Ali wanted to stay and work for a few hours.
Ali was absolutely thrilled that her mom said yes. She finished speaking to her mom, left school at 2:25 that afternoon, and got on the school bus to take her home.

Now, Ali’s school bus had a security camera, and Ali was last seen on the video footage getting off her bus that day just three houses away from where she lived.
She got off the bus with a few other neighborhood kids, who remembered her walking behind them, busy texting away on her phone.
“The last eyewitness accounts of Ali state she was walking away from her home towards exiting the neighborhood,” Jo Ann wrote on a website dedicated to Ali.
“The last communication recorded was a text message sent to a friend at 2:57 PM. A reasonable assumption would be that ten minutes of casual walking would put Ali somewhere on the road outside her neighborhood that leads to the Burger Barn.”
Jo Ann had been at work herself when Ali got off the bus, headed to the Burger Barn, but Jo Ann got home at approximately 5:30 that night like she normally did.
Jo Ann was not surprised that Ali wasn’t there to greet her, as she was under the impression Ali was still at work. She tried sending some texts to Ali, which Ali never replied to.
