This Couple Shared Their Controversial List Of Wedding Guest Expectations On TikTok

The wedding planning process might be the most stressful precursor to beginning a marriage. Although, the task of sharing wedding expectations with your guest list might take the cake for most anxiety-inducing responsibility.

And while some partners may fret over sharing a color palette or plus-one limitation, one happy couple on TikTok pulled out all the stops for their guest expectation list.

Kaytlyn Rosko, a twenty-six-year-old wedding photographer from Colorado, was ecstatic after getting engaged to her partner Tyler Wyatt. Kaytlyn has photographed numerous romantic ceremonies for other couples, so she was excited to customize her day to her liking.

Still, actually communicating her preferred expectations with their guest list was causing some uneasiness. So, the pair took to TikTok and shared their non-negotiable guidelines.

“Hyping ourselves up to tell our wedding guests that no plus ones are allowed, there is a dress code, kids are not invited, and we are not giving out any favors,” Kaytlyn wrote over a video of the pair.

The TikTok reached a whopping 17.3 million people, gained 2.5 million likes, and surprisingly garnered numerous supportive commenters.

“Plus-ones are not required, kids should not attend weddings unless they are the bride and groom’s, and favors are a WASTE of money!” commented one user, followed by a “clapping” emoji.

“Normalize kid-free weddings,” wrote a second user.

“The favor is the one hundred dollar dinner,” joked a third commenter.

Nonetheless, Kaytlyn’s rather extensive list also sparked some intense disagreements.

“People really think their weddings are as special for everyone else. Guests come as a courtesy to you. It is not an event they are willing to be inconvenienced for,” wrote one disheartened user.

“People take weddings way too seriously nowadays,” commented a second user.

Many TikTokers also inquired about the “no plus-one” rule. This rule in and of itself can be a slippery slope to navigate depending on the relationship. So, Kaytlyn made a follow-up video to address her plus-one decision process.

“We kind of came up with our own rules,” she said before sharing a list of questions. Kaytlyn and her fiancé Tyler asked themselves these questions before allowing a guest to have a plus-one.

The first was, “Have both you and your fiancé met them?”

“This sounds crazy to some people, but if you are dating long-distance or live long-distance from your family, this is so not outside of the realm of possibility. Or, is this the moment you want your fiancé to meet them?” Kaytlyn explained.

The following plus-one questions pertained to guests outside of the family.

“Do you or would you spend time with that person outside of work? Along with that, would you buy them dinner? That can kind of go across the board for school friends, coworkers, more casual friends,” Kaytlyn said.

Additionally, she and her fiancé used more general questions such as “can you imagine your wedding day without them?” and “are they supportive of you as a couple?”

If a guest’s plus-one does not satisfy the couple’s expectations, then they are reserved for the “overflow list.”

“You likely will have people cancel before your wedding day. So, you can keep that in mind and put all of the ‘maybe’ plus-ones on an overflow list. When people cancel, they will be the first people we go to while trying to fill up guest spots,” Kaytlyn explained.

Many TikTokers found her comprehensive decision-making guide to be understandable and a personal preference. Still, others believe that the whole idea adds a new level of stress to wedding planning and guest communication.

What do you think? Is Kaytlyn’s list “overkill,” or is it a great way to customize your perfect day?
