Her Friend Said She Was Successful In Art Because Of Privilege, So She Shut Her Down

This twenty-five-year-old woman is an artist who has been creating various kinds of artwork since she was a teenager and began attending a specialized art school. And ever since then, she sometimes submits her paintings to local exhibits.

“I have had some luck with some, which is cool. But, since it can be such a gamble, I don’t really try to participate in them,” she said.

On the other hand, her friend Kiera recently got into art during the COVID-19 lockdowns. She started by primarily creating digital art before she decided to try out painting.

And, just recently, there was a new gallery having a “call for artists,” and Kiera confided in her for advice. Essentially, Kiera wanted to know if she should try her hand at submitting some pieces or not.

And she basically told Kiera that the decision was all hers. However, she warned Kiera that since the gallery is brand new, there would likely be tons of submissions to consider. Moreover, digital art is not a medium the gallery accepts– and that’s what Kiera is most skilled in.

Nonetheless, Kiera decided to go through with it and submitted just one piece, even though the gallery accepted up to five per applicant. And, if you could not have guessed it, she did not get selected.

Anyway, this was not a huge issue until she and Kiera decided to hang out with some of their other friends.

During the hangout, Kiera began talking about that first art show as well as another one she had recently heard about.

Then, Kiera said she was debating whether or not to apply before making a pretty snarky remark.

“If I were as privileged as [you], I’d probably have more luck with getting my work out there,” Kiera said.

To this, she was utterly taken aback and asked Kiera what that meant. Then, Kiera went on to say she had better supplies, was able to take art classes, and had gotten into two art shows.

She responded by telling Kiera that none of that was a “privilege” because she could have done the same and has been doing the same. For example, she referenced how she gifted Kiera a ton of her expensive paintbrushes and paints when Kiera first got started.

But then, Kiera moved on to her art classes in high school and used that as an excuse for her success– which really ticked her off.

So, she ended up shutting Kiera down.

“You could have gone to the specialized high school too– all you had to do was apply. But, you wanted to stay at the base high school with friends,” she began.

“I work two jobs so I can pay for art classes and my supplies. You stick to YouTube videos and paint a couple of times a week. You are trying to compete against people who live and breathe art. Privilege has nothing to do with you not getting selected.”

But, even though she believed everything she said was true, Kiera and a few of her other friends totally disagreed.

They even left the hangout, and afterward, they began claiming that she needed to apologize to Kiera for being inconsiderate of her feelings.

Still, some of her other friends have totally backed her up.

They believe that even though Kiera did not want to hear the truth, she needed to eventually.

So now, she is stuck in a pretty awkward situation. She is not sure if standing up to Kiera and telling her the truth was the right thing to do, or if she should have just let it go.

What would you have done in her situation? Do you think Kiera was asking for it or not?
