He Was Starved, Neglected, And Left Inside Of A House That Had No Heat In The Middle Of Winter: After She Rescued Him, She Was Forced To Give Him Back To His Family
This is a heart-wrenchingly sad one for the books. It’s always hard when an animal that you love has to leave you.
Sometimes we are more connected to animals than we are to other humans. They have a special place in our hearts and deserve the endless and unconditional love in return that they give us.
But unfortunately, not every pet owner feels the same. Be warned: this is a tragic story that hasn’t been fully resolved in a good way as of yet.
For Olde English Bulldogge Kano, life has been more difficult than it had to be as a domestic pet. He met his fabulous foster mom, who goes by the name Sophia M. on her Change.org page when his legal family abandoned him.
“Kano was originally given to me as a foster pup by a co-worker,” Sophia wrote on her website, explaining Kano’s story.
“Kano’s primary caretaker and owner was sadly diagnosed with health issues, and her son, who lived with her, was incarcerated once again for DUI and related charges. As a result, Kano was abandoned in a home with no heat in the frigid winter.”
While Kano survived these horrible circumstances, unfortunately, his canine partner “was discovered deceased and decaying amongst the house debris.”
But Kano was rescued by Sophia as a foster pup who needed a good home. She was the answer to all of his problems. Given his previous circumstances, Kano arrived extremely sick and unhealthy. His condition was dangerous.

“He was dirty and horribly emaciated. He was so dehydrated that his coat was plagued with dandruff, his lips were cracked and bleeding, and his eyes were bloodshot and cloudy,” she wrote. “Kano was also later diagnosed with a double ear infection, interdigital dermatitis, conjunctivitis, separation anxiety, and atopic dermatitis.”
Being taken in by Sophia was probably the best thing that could have ever happened to Kano. She, in a way, saved his life.
“Under my care, Kano thrived. He gained 30lbs, and all of his medical issues were resolved,” she wrote.
With Sophia, Kano lived a beautifully happy life. He was a normal, well-cared-for dog who got to enjoy the carefree little things out of life.
“His days were filled with walks around the neighborhood, during which he visited his favorite human friends,” she detailed. “He had piles of toys, and it was amazing watching him quickly learn how to be a playful puppy.”
Sophia and her boyfriend struck gold when they were told that Kano was now theirs. They could keep him forever:
“On March 26th, during a meeting at a local dog park, Kano’s owner told me and my boyfriend that we could keep Kano: ‘I can see how happy he is, and how much he loves you and you love him. Keep the dog.’ To say we were thrilled would be an understatement. We left the dog park, overjoyed and relieved. We were finally a family. Or so we thought.”
But just when things were looking up for Kano and Sophia thought that they would never have to part, the worst possible thing happened. Although one of his owners agreed to let him go, not all of them did.
“About one month later, I was informed that her son had been released from jail and was demanding “his dog” be returned,” she wrote.
As if he were a child, a custody battle ensued, fighting for Kano to stay with his foster family. But things didn’t work out well for Sophia. She was court-ordered to return Kano to his prior owners– the ones who abandoned him in freezing weather.
“On Friday, September 16, 2022, the Gloucester Township civil court ruled that Kano should be returned to this man’s custody,” she wrote. This was the decision even though she presented evidence of “abandonment, neglect, and abuse” and with “no proof that Kano was owned, registered, or licensed to this man.”
This is abominable to any animal lover. However, the argument for returning him to the previous owners stands solely on the ground that an animal is property, just like any other possession. In the words of the man’s lawyer, according to Sophia:
“It doesn’t matter what the dog’s best interests are. The law is the law. He is a piece of property, and that property needs to be returned to its owner.”
Sophia hasn’t stopped fighting. This can’t go horrible problem can’t go unchanged. This is why Sophia has started a petition on Change.org to get Kano back.
“We are fighting for Kano and all of the animals suffering because of this unjust and inhumane legal status so that this tragedy doesn’t repeat itself,” she explained. “We are beginning a petition to have Congress sign into law Kano’s Law so that a pet’s best interests are considered during a custody determination hearing.”
The petition asks for pets to be deemed independent units, not property, and to therefore be considered justly in legal manners.
They are a part of our families and should be treated as such. Read more about the proposed legislation, Kano’s Law, here. Help Sophia get her beloved pet back by signing the petition here.
