Her Sister Took A Family Heirloom From Her Adopted Daughter And Claimed She Wasn’t Real Family
This twenty-eight-year-old woman met her husband about ten years ago. And at that time, he was a single father raising a six-month-old baby girl named Lily.
She had worked at a bakery where he would bring Lily every Saturday. So, they eventually got to talking, started going out, and finally got married six years ago. Soon after they tied the knot, she also legally adopted Lily as her daughter.
Anyway, her family has a tradition where, once the oldest daughter turns eleven, she is gifted an old sapphire ring.
“The ring belonged to my grandmother, who gave it to my aunt, who gave it to me because all of my cousins are male,” she explained.
“Lily’s eleventh birthday was a few months ago, so I gave the ring to her because she is my oldest daughter.”
And if you could not have guessed it, Lily was over the moon. Her daughter loved her new ring more than anything and even wore it on a chain around her neck in order to keep track of it.
The other day, though, she received a text from her sister, Mia, and everything went downhill after that.
Apparently, Mia– who is twenty-four– is one of Lily’s favorite people. Mia was always a great aunt who would even surprise Lily by picking her up from school, taking her to the bookstore, and going out to eat.
So, when Mia texted her the other day and said she would be picking up Lily from school, she thought nothing of it. She just told Mia to make sure Lily got home at a decent hour since, after all, it was a school night.

Anyway, the afternoon came and went, and Lily eventually got home about an hour after dinner time. But, instead of being cheery, her daughter barely said hello before just going up to their bedroom.
At first, she assumed that perhaps Lily was just tired. So, she did not immediately go to see what was wrong.
Later that night, though, she did go to talk to Lily, and after walking into her daughter’s bedroom, she noticed that Lily had been crying.
And after pushing Lily to share what made her so upset, it came out that Mia actually took back the sapphire ring.
“Mia took the ring from her because it’s a ‘family’ heirloom that is supposed to go to the ‘actual’ oldest daughter. And because I adopted Lily, that meant my daughter was not really family,” she recalled.
Obviously, hearing that from their favorite aunt broke Lily’s heart. And she was utterly infuriated as Lily’s mother.
However, she was not able to immediately go to Mia’s apartment and get the ring back because she had to spend the entire evening reassuring Lily that she really was family. How gutwrenching.
So, come the following morning, she ended up leaving Mia a voicemail telling her sister to return the ring or else she was going to drive over there and get it herself. Still, though, Mia did not understand how inappropriate her behavior had been.
Instead, Mia just texted back and said that she would only hand over the ring if she gave birth to a daughter before she did. Plus, Mia claimed that they would be keeping the ring safe until then to make sure it did not go to “the wrong person.”
This understandably only angered her more. So, she gave Mia one last chance and said that if the ring was not returned by 2:00 p.m. that day, she would contact the police.
After that, though, Mia started blowing up her phone like crazy and accusing her of being ridiculous.
Plus, her mother got involved and said that threatening to call the police was way over the line. Her mom also claims that Mia was just trying to keep the family tradition.
So now, she is at a total loss about what to do. Her daughter’s sense of belonging to her family was totally uprooted in a matter of a few hours, and her sister is still refusing to give back the ring.
At the same time, though, all of the pushback from her mother has made her wonder if threatening to call the cops made the situation worse.
If your sibling told your adopted child they were not really family, how would you feel? Do you think she has a right to call the police or not? How would you handle this situation?
