But, even though her grandfather would probably cave if she asked him, she honestly decided to tell her father no. First of all, she claims that she would just feel too guilty. That diamond is the only piece her grandfather has left of his family, whom he lost due to the “most horrific circumstances” at just nine years old.
In fact, her grandfather’s family members do not even have graves. So, that diamond is all he has left to remember them by.
“And what right do any of us have to dictate what he does with it?” she vented.
It appears that she is the only one with this perspective, though. And now, her family is villainizing her for it.
She claims that her father, Laura, and Katie have all been texting and calling her nonstop about how upset they are that she is allowing her grandfather to exclude Katie from their family. Moreover, they pointed out how she already has an engagement ring– so they believe she should “help” her grandfather “soften” and allow her stepmom and stepsisters to be considered a real part of the family.
As of now, she still has not let everyone’s input sway her decision. However, she has been left wondering if refusing to butt in and pressure her grandfather to hand the diamond over to her stepsister is actually the right thing to do or not.
Is it ever okay to just ask for someone else’s belongings like that, especially when it is as valuable a family heirloom as her grandfather’s diamond? Do you think she has a right to want to respect her grandfather’s wishes– even if they make the rest of her family unhappy? How would you deal with this situation?
