Then, they dropped a bomb on him, revealing the true reason his mother wanted to reconnect.
He learned that his half-sister is very sick and needs a kidney transplant, but no one in their family is a donor match. His mom and her husband asked him if he’d be willing to find out if he was a match and donate one of his kidneys to his half-sister if he was.
“To say I was shocked is an understatement,” he said. “I didn’t agree at first and told them I needed time to think.”
His mom eventually convinced him to take a test to see if he was a match, and then he could decide from there. Sure enough, he was a match. When his mom and her family found out, they put a tremendous amount of pressure on him to donate a kidney.
His mom’s family began sending him money and gifts, and her husband even offered to pay his college tuition.
Now, he’s very torn on what to do. His dad thinks he should do it because it’s not his half-sister’s fault he has a rough relationship with his mother. His aunts and grandmother think it’s a bad idea and that his mom’s family should explore other options. At the end of the day, the decision is up to him.
While he thinks his half-sister is a very sweet girl, he can’t shake the fact that his mom really only sought to fix their relationship because he could potentially save her daughter. He believes that if he weren’t a donor match, she would’ve cut him off again.
Should he donate his kidney to his half-sister?
