This 33-year-old guy has a girlfriend a year younger than him, and they have been dating for close to two years now.

He thinks that his girlfriend is pretty much the girl of his dreams, and he does want to marry her one day.

But his girlfriend has terrible restaurant etiquette, and it bothers him immensely; more than he thinks it really should.

First of all, what he means by awful etiquette in a restaurant is that his girlfriend barely leaves a tip.

He and his girlfriend make great money, so it’s not that she’s stingy on her tips because of a lack of funds.

They always take turns paying every time they do go out to eat, and when he pays, he leaves a tip of approximately 20%.

“Over the weekend, she tipped $3 on a $46 bill,” he explained. “Sometimes I’ve tried to leave cash on the table, but she gets upset, takes it, hands it back to me.”

“We’ve only had a few fights, and almost every one of them has started like this. She is absolutely convinced that throwing a few dollars is more than enough.”

“She gets ALL of this from her family. Her parents took us out last Christmas to a very expensive steak house. Her dad made an absolute scene and production of tipping $20 on a $500+ bill “because it’s the holidays.”

On top of being a terrible tipper, his girlfriend will send next to every single dish she orders back. She always claims that something is wrong with her order.

For example, she will complain about a hamburger being too done or not enough done.

She will also complain about having dirt in the lettuce of her salad, or that her pasta is not cooked well enough, and this happens every single time she orders.

His girlfriend always demands that the staff pays crazy attention to her. She wants her drinks refilled nonstop.

She wants more napkins to be brought to their table or will complain that a fork is filthy. She always expects the waitstaff to be there for her every beck and call, and if they’re slow to respond, she loudly starts wanting to know where they are in order to get the attention she feels that she deserves.

To top it all off, his girlfriend’s behavior gets even worse when the check comes, and it’s time to pay up.

“She argues over the bill every time, demanding to speak with a manager to have something taken off or reduced because she wasn’t satisfied,” he said.

“It doesn’t matter if it’s Applebees or the Capital Grille…never pay the full amount. I am 100% sure this all comes from how her parents act at restaurants. I’ve seen them do this every time we’ve eaten out together.”

“It isn’t a money thing either they’re not struggling. It is to the point that I don’t like going out to eat because of what I know is about to happen. She is completely aware of how tipping is supposed to work but insists that it is optional and to ‘stop throwing money away.'”

His girlfriend does not act like this outside of restaurants, and he doesn’t get it. When she’s not eating out, she is kind, lovely, and full of reason.

But the instant she walks into a restaurant, she changes into another person, and not a good one.

He has attempted to address his girlfriend’s awful behavior, but she ignores his pleas. He’s left wondering how he can get through to her and how he can get her to understand this needs to stop.

What advice do you have for him?
