This 44-year-old is married to his wife, 38, and she has a 38-year-old brother who lost his job recently and is struggling to make ends meet.

Her brother asked if he could borrow $2,000 from them. Unfortunately, he and his wife don’t have a close bond with her brother.

For more than a year, he hasn’t been in communication with them, and, according to his long-term girlfriend, he despises them.

“I offered a compromise where we would hire him to do some work, mainly painting inside the house, to earn the money. We could even advance him half the money so he could catch up on some overdue bills,” he said.

Her brother outright rejected the offer and was angry afterward. In 2007, his wife immigrated from Brazil. Several years later, her brother followed.

Tragically, their parents passed away a few years apart from one another when his brother-in-law was about 19 or 20 years old. This was why he moved to the United States.

He and his wife assisted his brother with his immigration, and they also guided him through the process of earning an Associate’s degree in IT.

After their parents passed away, his wife handled everything related to their parents’ estate, and her brother didn’t do anything to help. But he thought that this could have been because of how young her brother was at the time.

$5,000 of their parents’ money remained, and his wife gave all of it to her brother because she was older and more financially stable than he was.

“That money has been sitting in a Brazilian bank account ever since (probably 10 years). He’s never asked for it or done anything over the last 10 years to move it to the US,” he explained.

Over the years, his brother-in-law got married, they had a daughter together, and then later got a divorce.

His brother-in-law’s daughter and their daughter are both 7, and as cousins, they are very close and also attend the same school.

Drama ensued when his brother-in-law’s ex-wife sued him in order to get more custody of their daughter.

His wife decided against testifying on behalf of both her brother and his ex-wife. She was put in an uncomfortable position and felt caught in the middle of their feud. Because of her concern about being forced to potentially lie on the witness stand while under oath and upsetting someone, she didn’t testify and stayed out of the case. It was a difficult choice to make.

Despite the tension, his wife and her brother’s ex-wife are still amicable since their daughters still hang out together all the time.

After all of this, her brother stopped talking to them.

“His girlfriend left a really nasty voicemail telling us we’re all terrible people and traitors. I think the girlfriend is a big part of the problem and seems to have a lot of toxic traits. A lot of ‘nobody cares about you except me’ kind of stuff while also doing a lot to undermine his relationships with anyone else,” he shared.

A couple of weeks ago, his brother-in-law reached out to ask for the $2,000 loan. Apparently, he wants to end the relationship with his girlfriend. In order to stop living with her so they can go their separate ways, he is going to sell his house.

The house is in his brother-in-law’s name, but it’s a tricky situation because his girlfriend has children from a previous relationship, and she and the children have been living with him in his home for a year or two.

He and his wife want to show their support for her brother’s decision to break up with his toxic girlfriend.

Also, his wife’s brother has had one of their aunts, who still lives in Brazil, contact her in order to convince her to get the money out of the Brazilian bank account for him. Since he hadn’t wanted to contact his sister directly, he put their aunt up to the task instead.

They don’t mind him getting the money since it’s his, but it would be complicated because it’s remained in the account for a decade.

In order to get the money, someone would need to fly to Brazil to do it. Another option would be for his wife to allow their aunt to be the power of attorney so that she could withdraw the money from the bank account and then send it to her brother afterward.

Their aunt is willing to do this, but in order to put this in place, a meeting at the consulate has to take place, which is three hours away from where they live, and it’s during the week while he and his wife are both working.

His wife suggested that she go to the consulate on one of her days off in the middle of the week, and she could do that in a week or two.

However, her aunt relayed the message from her brother that they should just loan him the $2,000, and they could worry about the money in the Brazilian bank later, and they could deal with it themselves.

But he pointed out that they need to figure it out soon since no action has been taken in a long time, which would make the process more complicated. There is even potential that the bank would close the account.

In his view, his wife’s brother doing work for them could potentially help repair their relationship. After her brother is done working, they could allow him to have dinner with them.

Now that her brother rejected their idea, he told other people that they were trying to use him while he was going through a tough time. He even claimed that they were attempting to steal the money he had in the Brazilian bank.

He does wish that he and his wife could support her brother and help him while he’s down on his luck, and he’s happy that her brother is leaving an unhealthy relationship.

But it’s tough trying to help when it seems like her brother just wants to take their money and not work for it.

What would you do if you were in his shoes?
