Her Friend Asked Her To Be A Bridesmaid And Told Her To Wear White, But It Was All A Mean Plan To Make Her Look Like She Was In Love With The Groom

When this 26-year-old woman was 5-years-old, she and her family moved to a new neighborhood.
Her family’s next-door neighbors had a little girl that was her age named Bella (now 27). Right away, she and Bella became best friends, and both of their families had a close bond.
Their friendship continued for many years, and after high school graduation, she attended a college a couple of hours away, and Bella stayed in their hometown.
Bella came to her college to hang out with her a lot, and they had a ton of fun. During her sophomore year, she met Barrett (now 26) when they were in an economics class together.
She thought he was cute and intelligent, and while studying together, they started hooking up.
While the physical part was great, she didn’t feel like they had enough of an emotional connection to sustain a relationship in the long run, so they stopped hooking up and maintained a platonic friendship.
They never had discussions about wanting to date each other, but after they ended their hooking up, they didn’t hang out as much.
She and Barrett were part of group chat conversations, and she saw him at parties a lot, but that was about the extent of their friendship from then on.
One time, during her senior year of college, Bella came to visit her, and she introduced Bella to Barrett at a party.

“It was love at first sight for her. She interrogated me about him, and I informed her of our history. She seemed pretty upset about the fact that we had hooked up, but I assured her that there was absolutely nothing romantic there and that she had my blessing to pursue him,” she said.
After that, Bella made a move, and she and Barrett started hanging out and eventually began dating. Bella was thrilled, and she was thrilled to see Bella’s joy.
Following graduation, she accepted a job offer that was six hours away from home. Not long afterward, Barrett relocated so that he and Bella could live together in her hometown.
In the beginning, she traveled to visit them on a regular basis, but as time went on, things were more hectic, and they only got together once a year over the holidays.
Last year, for Christmas, her family hosted a party on Christmas Eve, and she invited Barrett and Bella.
At the party, Barrett proposed to Bella. The proposal was incredibly romantic and sweet, and everyone at the party was overjoyed for the two of them.
Once they were engaged, Bella talked exclusively about wedding planning, so she had a blast helping Bella think of cool ideas.
Throughout the following several months, she assumed that Bella would ask her to be the Maid of Honor, especially because Bella had talked about this not long after Barrett proposed.
However, Bella never asked her. Then, Bella stopped answering her phone calls.
When she received the Save the Date in the mail after still not hearing anything from Bella, she was finally able to get in touch with Bella to ask her what was going on.
Bella told her that because of the distance, she decided not to have her in the wedding party at all. As Bella thought through the logistics, she came to the conclusion that it would be too complicated as far as organizing bridal events.
Instead, Bella chose to have one of her cousins as her Maid of Honor, whom she didn’t even get along with.
Understandably, she was upset to hear this. She was Bella’s closest friend, and she was the friend Bella had known the longest.
Plus, she was the one who introduced Bella to Barrett in the first place, and she is still friends with him to this day.
During their conversation, she expressed to Bella that she could take days off of work and purchase plane tickets so that she could attend events, and she would do whatever she could to be a part of her wedding party.
She tried to persuade Bella that it wouldn’t really be as complicated as she thought it would be, but Bella wasn’t convinced and doubled down on her decision not to include her in the wedding.
After this, Bella changed the subject and asked her if she would be bringing a plus-one to the wedding.
“I was a little confused by this question because I just had a bad breakup, and she knew all about what went down. I told her that since I wasn’t seeing anybody currently, I’d probably be attending solo. She told me that she would keep my plus-one open until the last possible minute and encouraged me to find a date so I wouldn’t be lonely,” she explained.
She appreciated this but told Bella that because her own family would be attending the wedding, as well as a lot of mutual friends from her college and the hometown they both grew up in, she wouldn’t feel lonely.
After this talk with Bella, the two of them didn’t communicate much over the course of the next few months.
Even though she could have taken the initiative and contacted Bella more often, she was still upset that Bella chose not to include her in her wedding.
Later, she saw on social media that Bella had an engagement party that she’d never been made aware of or been invited to, but she didn’t confront Bella about it. She acknowledged that over time, sometimes friends grow distant.
Six weeks before the wedding, Bella called her and said that one of her bridesmaids stepped down from her role, so she wanted to know if she could take this bridesmaid’s place.
Because the pre-wedding events were already organized and booked, she would be standing in as a bridesmaid on Bella’s wedding day.
She was elated by this request and told Bella she would be happy to do it.
Bella then told her that for her wedding, she was doing a “reverse color palette,” and all of the bridesmaids and groomsmen would be wearing white, while she and Barrett were going to wear black.
When she heard this, she didn’t think it was odd because Bella enjoys making a statement and doing things that might be considered nontraditional or different.
“She apologized for the late notice and asked if I could find a white dress in time. I had a white slip dress already that would work and sent her a picture of it on the call to see if it would work. She verbally approved it and tagged it with a thumbs up on the text chain,” she shared.
The wedding ceremony was scheduled to start at noon, so the bridal party planned to meet at the venue at 8 a.m. so that they could have their hair and makeup done.
Early in the morning, she left her parents’ house in sweats and had her white dress in a bag, and when she got to the venue, she had a blast with Bella and the other bridesmaids. They all drank champagne as they got ready for the ceremony.
At about 10 a.m., Bella directed everyone to get into their dresses so that they had time to take photos, so she went into the bathroom to change into her white dress and touch up her makeup.
Once she emerged from the bathroom, she looked around and saw that all of the other bridesmaids were wearing blue dresses, and she was the only one wearing white.
She felt her stomach drop, and she immediately started going over the talk with Bella in her head. Panicking, she was wondering if she somehow misheard what color dress Bella asked her to wear, but she knew that she hadn’t.
After thinking it over for a few seconds, she was absolutely certain she was remembering correctly because Bella specifically mentioned the “reverse color scheme” idea. She had Googled the idea and confirmed it with Bella.
“No, this was a set-up. Bella was in the middle of the room in a bathrobe with a resigned look on her face. She said to her cousin, ‘I told you she was going to do something like this.’ Her cousin approached me and asked what I was wearing. I mumbled that Bella had told me to wear white. Bella didn’t even blink. She stared back and huffed out a laugh and said something about how, of course, I would have to make today all about me,” she continued.
Bella’s cousin began yelling at her, accusing her of being envious of Bella, claiming she was “in love” with Barrett and that she was insane.
Understandably, she was in shock and felt whiplash because everything was happening so fast. She just stood there, frozen and speechless with confusion. Just moments prior, everything had been going well.
Finally, she stuttered through her words as she explained that she had a different dress at her parents’ house and could rush home to grab it.
But Bella responded and told her that they “both knew” that they were no longer friends and she had to leave.
At these words, she started sobbing. She couldn’t understand what was going on or why Bella was saying this. All she knew was that this situation was serious.
Her body unfroze, and she ran off without taking any of her belongings with her. She raced out of the venue to her car and drove home, crying the entire way, still wearing the white dress that Bella had previously approved of.
Thirty minutes later, tons of people started reaching out to her, calling her all sorts of horrible names.
These people claimed she was cynical, immature, and envious and asked her how she had the audacity to do something like this to Bella.
Her own mother texted her to express her disappointment, adding that they would have a discussion when she got home later.
Heartbroken, she riffled through her parents’ liquor cabinet and drank. Because she was intoxicated by the time her parents got home, the details of their conversation were a bit blurred.
Her father didn’t seem capable of looking in her direction, and she didn’t feel like her mother was even truly listening or understanding her.
While they were talking, her mother didn’t believe it was true that Bella told her to wear white, and she didn’t know why her mother didn’t believe her.
As their discussion progressed, her mother referenced “‘everything else that happened,'” and she had no idea what her mother was talking about, so she asked her.
In response, her mother told her that she was referring to the ultimatums that she’d given Bella over the years.
Over the course of the following several hours, she learned that throughout the last few months, Bella had been weaving a web of lies.
“She systematically poisoned my family and friends against me,” she said.
It turned out that Bella told everyone that she was “mentally unstable” and “madly in love with Barrett.”
According to Bella, her boyfriend broke up with her because he knew she was obsessed with Barrett, which was a complete fabrication. In actuality, her boyfriend had been unfaithful during the relationship, so she broke up with him.
Bella also fed everyone a made-up story about how she had demanded that Bella only keep her or Barrett in her life.
Then, Bella pretended that she had asked her to be in her wedding party, but she refused because she said she wasn’t supportive of her relationship with Barrett, adding the lie that she told Bella that she was the one Barrett should be with.
Also, the false explanation Bella came up with for why she wasn’t at the engagement party was because she supposedly had a breakdown before the party.
Among all of these lies was the common thread of Bella being an innocent, kind friend doing her best to cope with an uncomfortable situation with her best friend, who was jealous of her.
Bella painted a picture of her best friend loving Barrett and Barrett clearly not reciprocating that love. In Bella’s stories, she understood how difficult it must be for someone to see someone they love marrying someone else.
Since Bella had been making up these stories and coming up with piles of lies for so many months, even her own mother thought Bella was the one telling the truth.
Eventually, she showed her mother her phone so that her mother could read the conversations between her and Bella.
She asked her mother to look for anything that would prove Bella was being honest. While her mother was looking through the messages, she saw the photo of the white dress she’d sent Bella, with Bella’s thumbs up of approval.
When her mother didn’t see anything in these messages showing that she was giving Bella ultimatums, and after seeing that Bella approved of the white dress, she finally realized that she was telling the truth.
After her mother finally took her side, her mother explained the truth to her father, and he was furious with Bella. She and her mother had to reassure him to relax and not do anything too drastic.
Despite her mother taking her side after learning the truth, she did tell her that she was a bit of a jerk for believing Bella that wearing white to her wedding would be acceptable.
In her mother’s opinion, she should have reached out to the other bridesmaids to confirm that they were also going to be wearing white, and she said that that was her duty as a bridesmaid.
She accepted this criticism, but she doesn’t think this negates that her actions weren’t at all malicious.
It was clear that Bella had been plotting against her for months.
The following day, she woke up with a horrible hangover.
She sent screenshots of her conversations with her Bella, including the photo she’d sent Bella of the white dress and Bella’s approval, to several people.
However, because she works as a graphic designer, everyone was convinced that she had just altered the image in Photoshop.
She pointed out that if she Photoshopped something, she would have done more than just make it look like Bella put a thumbs up on the photo she sent.
After the whole ordeal, only her mother, father, and one of the other bridesmaids (a woman who went to college with Bella) took her side.
This bridesmaid had been in the room when the drama went down, and she reached out to her on social media through private messages.
From the bridesmaid’s perspective, it was clear from how she reacted with utter shock that she hadn’t been lying about Bella telling her to wear white.
According to the bridesmaid, Bella had COVID-19, and afterward, she became a different person and was incredibly selfish and mean.
She told her that all of the bridal events were awful and Bella was terrible to be around.
The bridesmaid added that she had already decided to stop communicating with Bella after the wedding.
Now that hundreds of people have taken Bella’s side, she is devastated that her reputation and life have been destroyed.
What advice would you give her?
