This 32-year-old man was married to Jane, 30, now his ex-wife, for five years before they divorced. Their marriage fell apart when he learned that Jane had been having affairs with several men for the last year. Eventually, she got pregnant and made the confession that she wasn’t sure whether the baby was his or if the father was one of the men she’d been cheating with.

Two months or so after he and Jane divorced, which was two years ago now, he attempted to get in touch with her to find out if he was the father of her baby, but he didn’t have any luck reaching her. He then found out from a friend that Jane was in a new relationship, and she and her boyfriend had moved abroad. After that, he did his best to move forward with his life.

“Recently, Jane reached out to my mother, claiming that her kid is mine and in need of financial help. Jane told my mother that her partner left her when he found the kid was not his,” he said.

His mother has been obsessed with the idea of becoming a grandmother, and her obsession has ramped up in recent years because his older brother is gay and child-free, and he hasn’t been in a relationship since he and Jane divorced. Because his mother wants grandkids so intensely, she’s been endlessly attempting to persuade him to help Jane with her baby.

“However, I have doubts, given her infidelity. I find it hard to trust her claims without concrete evidence. So, I’ve insisted on a paternity test before committing to any financial or emotional support,” he explained.

If the DNA test reveals that he’s the father of Jane’s baby, he would have no problem pitching in to help her support the child because he knows that would be his duty. However, he won’t do so until he has legal proof that he’s the child’s biological father.

After he expressed that he wanted to contact lawyers and go through everything in a legal capacity, his mother and Jane argued against it. According to them, it’s obvious that the baby is his because of physical resemblances. The child has blue eyes like him, but he pointed out that Jane has blue eyes, too.

The conflict escalated when his mother posted a photo of herself with Jane’s baby, and she captioned the photo, “My grandson.” After that, several family members and friends have reached out to him to find out more information.

He explained to all of them that he wasn’t sure that the child was his, and he hoped to do a DNA test to verify whether or not he was the father. In response, his family members told him he was self-centered and needed to be responsible, adding that his mother was certain the child was her grandchild because it was true.

“My friends say I am a jerk for punishing the kid for what my ex-wife did. There is a chance the kid is mine, but I can’t shake off my doubts, and I refuse to be manipulated into a situation where I might end up responsible for a child who may not be mine,” he shared.

While he would be happy to fulfill his obligations as a father if the baby is his, he needs to verify this via a paternity test.

It’s been frustrating that so many close family and friends have been dismissing the importance of a DNA test, expecting that he should be willing to support a baby without knowing for sure that it’s his.

Luckily, his older brother understood his perspective and pointed out that everyone else seemed to think the child was his because his mother publicly made it clear that’s how she felt.

Where they live, family is a huge priority, so most of the people in his life believe this child must be his, even though no paternity test has been done.

What advice would you give him?
