Your home is meant to be a place of comfort and safety, a sanctuary you can retreat to after a long day’s work. However, emergencies can happen when you least expect them. It can be easy to overlook some basic safety measures within the home.

But being prepared to deal with accidents and understanding how to mitigate potential risks is crucial and can mean the difference between your life and your death. Here are some essential home safety tips that could save your life in various emergencies.

Keep Humidity Levels Low

When humidity levels are high in your home, it can contribute to mold growth, which is detrimental to your health. Mold can be a silent killer, triggering a host of health problems that seem to come from nowhere if you’re not aware of its presence in your home.

Living with mold can cause you to experience skin rashes, respiratory issues, and congestion. To prevent mold from growing, make sure your humidity levels do not go above 50 percent.

Clean Your Dryer

The dryer is one of the leading causes of house fires. Dryers can start fires because people fail to clean their machines properly. To keep your home and family safe, make sure to regularly remove all the lint, dust, and fibers from your dryer.

You can scrub the lint screen with soap and water using an old toothbrush. Afterward, rinse and dry it thoroughly. Additionally, wipe down your dryer every so often to get rid of any built-up lint.

Do This When You’re Choking

If you happen to be choking while you’re home alone, there are some methods you can utilize to help yourself out while help is on the way. First, dial 911 and then throw yourself against a wall until the object stuck in your throat is dislodged.

Another technique you’ve probably heard of is the Heimlich maneuver. To give yourself the Heimlich, place a fist above your navel, grab your fist with your other hand, and thrust your abdomen against a chair until the object is dislodged.

Have Baking Soda On Hand

If you need to put out a small grease fire, baking soda will do the trick. You should never use water to put out a fire that breaks out on your stove. When water combines with grease, it will only strengthen the flames.

Baking soda will help douse a small grease fire safely because it releases carbon dioxide when exposed to heat, which smothers the fire. In addition, keep a fire extinguisher in your house and make sure everyone knows how to use it.

Stabilize Your Cutting Board

Many cutting boards don’t come with rubber surfaces on the bottom that prevent them from slipping and sliding. This can lead to serious injury, particularly if you’re using a sharp knife to cut up food.

Wrap two rubber bands, one on each side of your board, to stabilize it and stop it from moving around.

Know Your Home’s Exit Points

In the case of a fire or a home invasion, it’s important that everyone in the home knows about all the exit points so they can make an escape. If a certain window has a tendency to get jammed, it’s best to know about that beforehand rather than during an emergency.

Those extra few seconds it takes to try to shove the window open can be the difference between your life and your death. People are often injured in emergencies because they were not prepared with an escape plan. So, make sure you know your exits.
